I am experienced in different
positions in petroleum industry
including Production and Reservoir
Engineering specially Well Testing
and Reservoir Studies. Also, I have
worked on Synthetic/Natural
Surfactant-Emulsion, EOR, and
HSE fields. I studied Bachelor's
degree in Production Engineering
and Master's degree in Reservoir
Engineering. Besides, I have good
experience in lecturing Simulation,
Reservoir Engineering, and relative

ESP overview 2

ESP System 3

➢ Electric submersible systems use multiple

pump stages mounted in series within a
housing, mated closely to submersible electric
motor on the end of tubing and connected to
surface controls and electric power by an armor
protected cable.
➢ The main function of an Electric Submersible
Pumping (ESP) System is to bring fluid from
the reservoir to surface.
➢ The ESP was introduced as a means of
Artificial lift by REDA in the late 1920s.
➢ There are a variety of pump sizes, capacities,
motor horsepower, and voltage ranges for
different applications.

ESP System 4

➢ ESP system can be divided into surface components and downhole components. These components
are listed below:

Surface Components: Downhole Components:

➢ Transformers ➢ Cable
➢ Motor controller Switchboard of Variable ➢ Cable Guard
Speed Drive (VSD) or Soft Start ➢ Cable Clamps
➢ Junction Box ➢ Pumps
➢ Cable Venting box ➢ Gas Separator
➢ Wellhead ➢ Seal Section
➢ Motor
➢ Sensor- Data Acquisition Instrumentation
➢ Drain Valve
➢ Check Valve

Pump Stage 5

➢ Fluid enters impeller through ‘eye’ near shaft and exits impeller on outer diameter (OD) Diffuser (in
blue) redirects fluid into next impeller.

Pump Impeller 6

Pump Stage 8

➢ Cut-away view of two impellers and diffusers.

➢ By stacking impellers and diffusers (multi-staging), desired lift (TDH-Total Dynamic Head) is
achieved.

Amir Arsalan Abbasi, M. Sc.

Gas Handler (AGH) 9

➢ An AGH is an advanced design pump specifically for gas handling.

➢ Advanced gas handler is intended for reservoir fluid (Mixture of oil, water and gas) conversion to
homogeneous fluid.
➢ AGH can be used with free gas up to 50% after GS.
➢ Can reduce vibration of the oil flow in tubing line.

Amir Arsalan Abbasi, M. Sc.

Gas Separator 10

➢ Used in applications where free gas causes

interference with pump performance.
➢ Units separate some of free gas from fluid stream
entering pump to improve pump’s performance.

Protector (Seal Section) 11

➢ Protects motor from contamination by well fluid

➢ Absorbs thrust from pump.
➢ Equalizes pressure between wellbore and motor.

Amir Arsalan Abbasi, M. Sc.

Submersible Motor 12

➢ Motor is filled with oil.

➢ It is a two-pole, three phase, 3,600 rpm
(revolutions per minute) design.
➢ Motor components are designed to withstand up
to 500oF temperatures.

Amir Arsalan Abbasi, M. Sc.

Downhole Components 13

Cable

Pump

Intake Sensor can also be added to the

pump below the motor to acquire
data like downhole pressure,
temperature, and vibration, these
supply pump monitoring data.

Electric Power Cable 14

➢ There are different types of cables available in the industry. These include:
✓ Round Cables
✓ Flat Cables
➢ Number of conductors also varies from 1,2,4 etc. (depending on company)
➢ Cables also vary depending on the type of insulation based on the working environment, there are
special cable insulation for corrosive fluids and severe environments.

Surface Equipment: Motor Controllers 16
VSD/VFD

Motor Controllers

➢ Fixed Speed Controller

➢ Variable Speed Controller

The variable speed controller allows

for flexibility of the downhole system
for flow control capabilities.

Amir Arsalan Abbasi, M. Sc.

Surface Equipment: Motor Controllers 17
SWB
➢ The controller is a device that can be used as to drive the
motor and provide protection capabilities (overload,
underload, etc).
➢ The controller also provides the capability to monitor the
production system with the use of a recording instrument.
