Q1. This flow chart converts kilometers to miles

Use the flow chart to convert the following kms into miles

a) 24km
Answer:
24/8=3
3 x 5 = 15 miles
b) 48km
Answer:
48/8=6
6 x 5 = 30 miles
c) 76km
Answer:
76/8=9.5
9.5 x 5 = 47.5 miles

Q2. This flow chart converts miles into kilometers

Use the flow chart to convert the following miles into kms

a) 45 miles
Answer:
45/5=9
9 x 8 = 72 km
b) 85 miles
Answer:
85/5=17
17 x 8 = 136 km
c) 77.5 miles
Answer:
77.5/5=15.5
15.5 x 8 = 124 km

Q3. Every car in the USA has a milometer. The milometer shows the total distance a car has travelled.
When Johannes bought a used car, the milometer read: 008 935 miles
When Johannes wanted to sell the car, the milometer read: 045 605 miles
Johannes paid $13995 for the car.
He is told that the value of his car goes down by 5 cents for every kilometre he drives.
Johannes thinks he should get about $10 500 for his car.
Is Johannes correct? Explain your answer. Show your working.
Answer:
Car driven = 45605 – 8935
= 36670 miles
= (36670 x 1.6) km
= 58672 km

Value of car down by for each km = 5 cents = $.05

Total value down = .05 x 58672 = $2933.6

Value of car = 13995 – 2933.6 = $11061.4

Q4. Find the areas of following shapes.

a)

Answer: 9 + 7 = 16
16/2 = 8
8 x 6 = 48m2
b)
Answer:

6 + 11 = 17
17/2=8.5
8.5 x 4 = 34 cm2
c)

Answer:
9 x 2.8 = 25.2 cm2

Q5. The diagram shows a trapezium.

a) Work out an estimate of the area of the trapezium.

Answer:
a = 8.7cm = 9cm
b = 14.9 = 15cm
Height = 6.2cm = 6cm
Estimated area
9 + 15 = 24
24/2 = 12
12 x 6= 72 cm2
b) Use a calculator to work out the accurate area of the trapezium.
Answer:
a = 8.7cm
b = 14.9
Height = 6.2cm
Area :
8.7 + 14.9 = 23.6
23.6/2= 11.8cm
11.8 x 6.2 = 73.16 cm2

Q6. Kai works out that the shaded area in this diagram is 875 cm2
Is Kai correct? Show your working.
Answer:
Area of Rectangle = 40 x 30 = 1200 cm2
Area of trapezium :
14 + 28 = 42cm
42/2 = 21cm
21 x 15 = 315 cm2

Area of shaded region = 1200 – 315 =885 cm2

He is incorrect.
