THE MIMIC MEN

Summary of Each Chapter

PART 1

CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 3
Singh talks about his retirement place, an old cocoa estate. He goes on describing what the
place would look like. He also says that he’d go riding in the morning and watch the
labourers having breakfast. Then he said, all of those are only his imagination as for now
he’s in the hotel; an unpleasant place to be/ not his dream place. No cocoa trees, no flowers.
Then he says that he goes to a public house (pub) every day to get lunch and he stated that
he does not enjoy being in such a place. He goes back to the hotel and says the hotel is
better than the pub. And he tells about the couple (their lord and lady) who dine with them.
He then compares his previous imagination (cocoa estate) with his reality today and the
past. He said he feared drama and he’s not a politician. Later, he describes what a true
politician is. He talks about their attitude, motivation, view in life, ambitions and downfall. He
tells that when he was given the power as a politician, he put up an act of the character he
created from Mr. Shylock hotel. He also tell the story when he was interviewed, the
interviewer asked him “ And sir, if all this were to come to an end tomorrow, what would you
do?” he then replied, “I would return to my business affairs and the life I had led before, in
the days of my marriage.”

CHAPTER 4
He recalled when they’re still in School, he and Sandra were friends, lovers maybe. Sandra
and her father are not on the best term, the worst I’d say and they keep arguing. Later, after
Sandra failed her examination– twice – she asked him to propose to her. He said yes. Then
they moved in together. They then register their marriage. After he finished his study, he
returned home to Isabella with the thought that his mother hadn't known about his marriage.
But she does– and is finding a local marriageable woman for him to marry instead. He was
calm despite this situation to ‘fight’ with his mother but instead, Sandra was hurt more.
CHAPTER 5
The couple found their circle between rich people after being rejected by the locals for
almost a fortnight. Then, Singh knew he needed to find a job. He inherited a wasteland from
her grandfather and with his knowledge, he started dividing the unwanted land into lots to
sell/rent to people who wanted to build a home on it. Later, the story goes on to how Sandra
was showing her weakness to Singh and later, his attitude towards her changed; from
admiration to pity. She herself has changed. Then, during a housewarming party, Singh
broke into anger when his things in his new house were broken during the party. He took a
drive to calm himself down, later when he returned, he saw his house was now clean. But he
didn’t go to his wife’s room first, rather to his own because they have been sleeping
separately for a while.

CHAPTER 6
Singh was waiting for Sandra to leave because he believed there’s another future awaiting
Sandra in another country, as for him, he ought to remain on Isabella. Then, he introduced a
new character, Wendy Deschampsneufs, who was foreshadowed to be the reason Sandra
left. He proceeds to tell the background of Deschampsneufs, of how they got their fame and
name. Singh had met Wendy before– once. When she was a child. Although it’s not a
pleasant memory when she climbed over him on a chair and did a little bit of showing off.
Eventually, Wendy and Sandra became friends and Sandra introduced her to the Cercle. A
myth going on the island is that; the wife goes off with someone from the Cercle Sportif,
outside whose gates at night the willingly betrayed husband waits in his motorcar. Then, he
tells the story of when he went to a restaurant with Sandra, they spotted Wendy in a small
party at another table and Sandra approached her after the music ended.

CHAPTER 7

PART 2

CHAPTER 1
It is a disgrace to be poor in Isabella. Singh’s father is poor but his mother’s side is a
millionaire. He also has an uncle, Cecil, around the same age as him. He admired the
mother’s side of the family. But his father hated them. He hates Cecil, he hates that family
and he hates Coca-Cola in which Singh couldn’t understand why. It's also revealed in this
chapter where Singh, or Ranjit Kripalsingh changed his name to Ralph Singh, making his
signature, R.R.K Singh. He said this is his secret life. He also has another friend– I
suppose– named Hok who also led a secret life like him. There’s another two characters
introduced in this chapter which are Browne and Deschampsneufs, who both know their
ways in life. Deschampsneufs by being rich and Browne is simply– connected. By the end of
this chapter, Singh lost his respect and admiration towards his mother’s father after
witnessing how apathy he is towards lobourers who he claimed as his people. He finally
realized his grandfather is not the person he thought he was.
