Predict Question:
Predict Question: How will the hemoglobin levels for the female Olympic athlete (sample 5) compare with the hemoglobin
levels for the healthy female (sample 2)?

Review Sheet Results
1. Is the male with polycythemia (sample 4) deficient in hemoglobin? Why?
Your answer:
The male with polycythemia is not deficient in hemolobin because there are more bemolobins than the healthy
male.(sample4 : 20 Hb grams per 100ml of blood, sample 1 : 16 Hb grams per 100ml of blood
2. How did the hemoglobin levels for the female Olympic athlete (sample 5) compare with the hemoglobin levels for the
healthy female (sample 2)? Is either person deficient in hemoglobin? How well did the results compare with your
prediction?
Your answer:
Hemoglobin in grams per 100ml of blood for the female Olympic athlete was 22 and for the healthy female was 14. I
thought
hemoglobin levels for the female Olympic athlete will be greater than those for the healthy female and my prediction was
right. Neither individuals are deficient in hemoglobin
3. List conditions in which hemoglobin levels would be expected to decrease. Provide reasons for the change when
possible.
Your answer:
Hemoglobin levels would be expected to decrease in the case of anemia, hepatic cirrhosis, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism,
systemic lupus erythematus, severe bleeding so, female with iron-deficiency anemia's blood sample indicated decrease in
hemoglobin level too
4. List conditions in which hemoglobin levels would be expected to increase. Provide reasons for the change when
possible.
Your answer:
Hemoglobin levels would be expected to increase in the case of polycythemia, congestion, COPD or living in the high site
5. Describe the ratio of hematocrit to hemoglobin for the healthy male (sample 1) and female (sample 2). (A normal ratio of
hematocrit to grams of hemoglobin is approximately 3:1.) Discuss any differences between the two individuals.
Your answer:
The ratio of hematocrit to hemoglobin for the healthy male was 3:1(48:16) and the ratio of hematocrit to hemoglobin for the
healthy female was 3.14:1(44:14). The male has more hemoglobin and because of testosterone, male's hematocrit is
higher
than female
6. Describe the ratio of hematocrit to hemoglobin for the female with iron-deficiency anemia (sample 3) and the female
Olympic athlete (sample 5). (A normal ratio of hematocrit to grams of hemoglobin is approximately 3:1.) Discuss any
differences between the two individuals.
Your answer:
The ratio of hematocrit to hemoglobin for female with iron-deficiency anemia was 5:1(40:8) and the ratio of hematocrit to
hemoglobin for the female Olympic athlete was 2.73:1(60:22). Sample 5's figure of hematocrit and hemoglobin grams per
100ml of blood is higher because Olympic athlete has lots of RBCs to carry oxygens, and person with iron deficiency
anemia has less hemoglobin because of the dificient iron.
