Reasoning:
Roots of the polynomial are same as the zeros of the polynomial. Therefore, roots can be
found by factorizing the quadratic equation into two linear factors and equating each to
zero.

ii) A cottage industry produces a certain number of toys in a day. The cost of
production of each toy (in rupees) was found to be 55 minus the number of toys
produced in a day. On a particular day, the total cost of production was ₹750. We
would like to find out the number of toys produced on that day.
What is Known?
(i) John and Jivanti together had 45 marbles
Reasoning:
Let the number of marbles that John had be x.
The number of marbles Jivanti had will be (Total marbles MINUS the Number of marbles
John had) = 45-x
What is Known?
(i) Cost of each day is 55 – (number of toys produced in a day) rupees.
(ii) On a particular day the total cost of production was Rs.750.
Reasoning:
Let the number of toys produced in a day is x.
( 55 – x ) ( x ) = 750.
Solution:
(55 − x) ( x) = 750
55 x − x ² = 750
55 x − x ² − 750 = 0
x ² − 55 x + 750 = 0
x ² − 25 x – 30 x + 750 = 0
x ( x − 25) – 30 ( x − 25 ) = 0
( x − 25) ( x − 30) = 0
x – 25 = 0 x – 30 = 0
x = 25 x = 30
Number of toys produced on that day is 25 or 30.
What is Known?
Reasoning:
Let one of the numbers be x. Then the other number will be
x + other number = 27
Other number = 27 – x
Product of the two numbers = 182
This can be written in the form of the following equation:
x ( 27 − x ) = 182
Solution:
x ( 27 − x ) = 182
27 x − x ² = 182
27 x − x ² − 182 = 0
x ² − 27 x + 182 = 0
x ² − 14 x – 13x + 182 = 0
x ( x − 14 ) – 13 ( x − 14 ) = 0
( x − 13) ( x − 14 ) = 0
x – 13 = 0 x – 14 = 0
x = 13 x = 14
The numbers are 13, 14.
Q4. Find two consecutive positive integers, the sum of whose square is 365.
What is Known?
Sum of squares of these two consecutive integers is 365.
Reasoning:
Let the first integer be x.
Solution:
x 2 + ( x + 1) = 365
2
x 2 + ( x 2 + 2 x + 1) = 365 (a + b) = a 2 + 2ab + b 2
2
2 x 2 + 2 x + 1 = 365
2 x 2 + 2 x + 1 − 365 = 0
2 x 2 + 2 x − 364 = 0
2( x 2 + x − 182) = 0
x ² + x – 182 = 0
x ² + 14 x – 13 x – 182 = 0
x ( x + 14 ) – 13 ( x + 14 ) = 0
( x − 13) ( x + 14 ) = 0
x – 13 = 0 x + 14 = 0
x = 13 x = − 14
Value of x cannot be negative (because it is given that the integers
are positive).
x = 13 x + 1 = 14
Q5. The altitude of right triangle is 7 cm less than its base. If the hypotenuse is 13
cm, find the other two sides.
What is Known?
Reasoning:
In a right triangle, altitude is one of the sides. Let the base be x cm.
Next, we can apply the Pythagoras theorem to the given right triangle.
Pythagoras theorem:
Hypotenuse² = side 1² + side 2²
13² = x² + ( x − 7) ²
Solution:
13² = x ² + ( x − 7) 2
169 = x ² + x ² − 14 x + 49
169 = 2 x ² − 14 x + 49
2 x ² − 14 x + 49 – 169 = 0
2 x ² − 14 x − 120 = 0
2 x ² − 14 x − 120 = 0
2
x ² − 7 x – 60 = 0
x ² − 12 x + 5 x – 60 = 0
x ( x − 12 ) + 5 ( x − 12 ) = 0
( x + 5) ( x − 12) = 0
x – 12 = 0 x + 5 = 0
x = 12 x = − 5
We know that the value of the base cannot be negative.
∴ Base = x = 12 cm
Altitude = 12 -7 = 5 cm
Q6. A cottage industry produces certain number of pottery articles in a day. It was
observed on a particular day that the cost of production of each article (in rupees)
was 3 more than twice the number of articles produced on that day. If the cost of the
production on that day is ₹ 90, find the number of articles produced and the cost of
each article.
What is Known?
(i) On a particular day that cost of production of each article (in rupees) was 3 more than
twice the no. of articles produced on that day.
(ii) The total cost of the production is ₹ 90.
Reasoning:
Let the number of articles produced on that day be x.
Therefore, the cost (in rupees) of each article will be (3 + 2x)
