Making the leap from school to university
Getting into university is an important event for young people. While most students are excited about it, they should
also be aware (11) the difference between university and school.
At school, most of your learning is done in the classroom. Teachers give you regular assignments and (12)___ support
and resources to help you complete them. Meanwhile, most of your learning at university involves (13)______ and project
work that you need to plan and complete by a certain date. It is your responsibility to review lecture notes, read textbooks,
and do research to find information in the library or online.
Your relationships at school are often limited to schoolmates or classmates. You interact with them mostly in a school
environment; therefore, your group of friends is small and very familiar. By contrast, at university, you not only have more
contacts, but you also meet people from different backgrounds. Therefore, you need better (14)______ skills to deal with
any conflict you may come into when interacting with other people.
As a secondary school student, you also live with your parents (15)______ provide you with the daily care and support
you need. You don't have to worry about things such as shopping or cooking for yourself. You have your parents take care
of your physical and mental well-being. Once you go to university, you will probably move away from home and start to live

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training programme.
Such programmes offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience. Programmes usually last between
two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as practical elements. You will spend one or two days a
week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire the theoretical knowledge that you will need
in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent at a company. There you get to apply your newly acquired
knowledge in practice, for example by learning to operate machinery. You will get to know what your company does, learn
how it operates and find out if you can see yourself working there after completing your training.
This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job: by the time you have completed
your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also have hands-on experience in your
job. There are around 350 officially recognised training programmes in Germany, so chances are good that one of them will
suit your interests and talents. You can find out which one that might be by visiting one of the jobs and vocational training
fairs which are organised in many German cities at different times in the year.
Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training programme are very good. This
is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans: around two thirds of all students leaving
school go on to start a vocational training programme.

Improve Your Time-Managing Skills
It is common for all of us to take more tasks than our desired potential. This can often result in stress and tiredness.
Learn the art of sharing work with your partners based on their skills and abilities.
Before the start of the day, make a list of tasks that need your immediate attention as unimportant tasks can consume much
of your precious time. Some tasks need to be completed on that day only while other unimportant tasks could be carried
forward to next day. In short, prioritize your tasks to focus on those that are more important.
Carry a planner or notebook with you and list all the tasks that come to your mind. Make a simple “To Do” list before
the start of the day, prioritize the tasks, and make sure that they are attainable. To better manage your time-management
skills, you may think of making 3 lists: work, home, and personal.
Stress often occurs when we accept more work than our ability. The result is that our body starts feeling tired which can
affect our productivity. Instead, share tasks with your partners and make sure to leave some time for relaxation.
Most of the successful men and women have one thing in common. They start their day early as it gives them time
to sit, think, and plan their day. When you get up early, you are more calm, creative, and clear-headed. As the day
progresses, your energy levels start going down, which affects your productivity and your performance as well.

Peer Pressure
Mary is walking to her maths lesson. She has got a test, but she feels all right. Suddenly, Dan, the coolest boy in the
class, speaks to her, “Come on!” he says. “Forget maths. Let’s go into town!” Now Mary feels bad. She has to make a
difficult decision. Should she go to maths because that is the right thing to do, or should she take the chance to be friends
with the most popular person in the class?
If you have had an experience like this, don’t worry. It is called peer pressure and it happens to everybody. However,
people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don’t want to do, but shy and anxious people
often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them,
or perhaps they are just curious about trying something new. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they
really don’t want to do.
It is hard being the only one who says ‘no’, and the question is - how do you do it? Firstly, you must decide what you
believe in. If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn’t like is a bad
idea then the answer is simple. Don’t do it. It is your decision, not anybody else’s. You don’t need to shout and scream, but
you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, “No, thanks. I don’t want to do that.”
Of course, being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer,
or friend, who will say ‘no’ too. Choose your friends carefully. You want friends to support you when you are in trouble. You
don’t want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren’t always the most
trustworthy.
However, peer pressure is not completely negative. You can learn a lot from people of your own age. They can teach
you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. And don’t forget you can tell them things too and that
always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn’t about feeling depressed. It is
about sharing experiences and having fun.

In the past hundred years, biodiversity around the world has decreased dramatically. Many species have gone
extinct. Extinction is a natural process; some species naturally die out while new species evolve. But human activity has
changed the natural processes of extinction and evolution. Scientists estimate that they are dying out at hundreds of times
the natural rate.
A major reason for the loss of biodiversity is that natural habitats are being destroyed. The fields, forests, and
wetlands where wild plants and animals live are disappearing. Land is cleared to plant crops or build houses and factories.
Forests are cut for lumber and firewood. Between 1990 and 2005, the amount of forested land in Honduras, for instance,
dropped 37 percent.
As habitats shrink, fewer individuals can live there. The creatures that survive have fewer breeding partners, so
genetic diversity declines.
Pollution, overfishing, and overhunting have also caused a drop in biodiversity. Global climate change - the latest
rise in the average temperature around the globe, linked to human activity - is also a factor. Warmer ocean temperatures
damage fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs. A single coral reef can shelter 3,000 species offish and other sea creatures
such as clams and sea stars.
