Subject: Statistics and Probability

Session: Hypothesis Testing

I – Find the p-value and illustrate using the curve given the following information:
1. Left-tailed test; computed z statistic = -1.62

2. Right-tailed test; computed z – statistic = 2.06

3. Two-tailed test,; computed z statistic = 1.22

4. Left-tailed test; computed z statistic = -1.41

5. Two-tailed test; computed z statistic = -1.62

II – Test each of the following hypotheses using the given information by the p-value method: (Use the back page)
1. H0 : 𝜇 = 84
H1 : 𝜇 ≠ 84
x̄ = 87, 𝜎 = 10. N = 35, 𝛼 = 0.05

2. H0 : 𝜇 = 45
H1 : 𝜇 < 45
x̄ = 40, 𝜎 = 12, n = 32, 𝛼 = 0.01

3. It is claimed that the average weight of babies at birth is 3.4 kg. The average weight of a random sample of 30
newly born babies was determined. It was found out that the average weight was 3.1 kg. Is there a reason to
believe that the average weight of babies at birth is not 3.4 kg? Assume that the population standard deviation
is 1.1 kg. Use 0.05 level of significance.
4. A company which produces batteries claims that the life expectancy of their batteries is 90 hours. In order to
test the claim, a consumer interest group tested a random sample of 40 batteries. The test resulted to a mean
life expectancy of 87 hours. Using a 0.05 level of significance, can it be concluded that the life expectancy of their
batteries is less than 90 hours? Assume that the population standard deviation is known to be 10 hours.
5. It is claimed that the average monthly income of chemical engineers last year was P27,900. A random sample
of 35 chemical engineers is selected and it is found out that the average monthly salary is P28,000. Using 0.01
level of significance, can it be concluded that there is an increase in the average monthly income of chemical
engineers? Assume that the population standard deviation is P250.50.

III – Find the approximate p-value given the following information:

1. A two-tailed test; computed t-value = 1.845; df = 10

2. A left-tailed test; computed t-value = 2.295; df = 21

3. A right-tailed test; computed t-value = 1.565; df = 27

4. A two-tailed test; computed t-value = 2.452; df = 12
