shall prevail.

1.3 Environmental Constraints

The Equipment/Materials to be used for HVAC Systems shall be capable of withstanding the climatic
environment specified in Project Specification “Basic Engineering Design Data” (see Section 1.2.1 above).
e.g.,:
Corrosion-resistant finish shall be suitable for the specified site conditions.
Outdoor equipment shall be capable of withstanding a wide range of the weather conditions.
Outdoor equipment contained in a cabinet without sunshade shall be designed, considering the heat of
the cabinet due to direct rays of the sun in addition to the heat generation of the equipment itself.
Winter start modifications shall be required for air-cooled condensing units having a heat pump duty
in order to allow the units to start under low ambient temperature conditions.
The aforementioned requirements shall be superposed on the other requirements specified in this specification.

1.4 General Requirements for HVAC Equipment/Materials

(1) HVAC equipment selected shall be of robust construction with suitable corrosion resistance, shall not
generate excessive noise during operation, and shall have a long “in service” life, complying with the
design requirements and site conditions.
(2) All HVAC equipment (including their composed parts like motor, air filter) shall be certified and/or tested
prior to delivery in accordance with internationally recognized standards (e.g., ARI Standards, ASHRAE
Standards), or manufacturers’ nonprofit organization standards (e.g., AMCA Standards, NEMA
Standards), or manufacturers’ equivalent standards.
(3) Testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB) of HVAC systems shall be conducted in accordance with
ASHRAE 111, or SMACNA HVAC Systems - Testing, Adjusting and Balancing, or internationally
recognized equivalent standards.

provided in order to attain the required level.
Vibrating equipment shall be isolated from the building structure by the use of vibration isolators with an
appropriate isolation efficiency, and shall be provided with suitable flexible connections to the inlets and outlets
designed to minimize the transmission of vibration.

Recovering from the failure shall be by means of manual reset switch. An automatic reset is not permitted.
The chilling units shall contain indicator lights so designed as to make known type of failure, unless a
change to the standardized unit is required.
The chilling units shall transmit a failure alarm signal (as a common) to HVAC Panel as specified in
“Specification for Building Electrical Equipment and Materials (see Section 1.2.1 above)”. Control signal
interface between the unit and the HVAC Panel may be in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard
specification for the unit. It is preferable, however, that the HVAC Panel should power the signal circuit
with AC 24V, 1A max. for continuous signal (contact/close: alarm, break/open: normal condition), unless
noted otherwise.
(2) Compressors
A vapor compression system shall be one of the following types of compressors.
(a) Reciprocating Compressors:
Capacity control shall be by means of cylinder unloading in equal steps which shall determine the
design and operating temperatures of chilled water systems. Reciprocating compressors shall have
either hermetic, semi-hermetic or open drive motor configuration.
(b) Centrifugal Compressors:
They shall generally incorporate two stages of compression with an interstage economizer to improve
efficiency. Modulated control approaching 10% of full rated capacity shall be attainable, in
conjunction with condensing pressure control.
Centrifugal compressors may be direct driven or driven via a speed increasing gear train and may be
semi-hermetic (thereby eliminating the need for drive shaft seal) or open drive.
(c) Screw Compressors:
Capacity control, down to 10% output, shall be achieved by varying the compressors displacement by
means of a slide valve to retard the point at which compression commences.
Units incorporating a flooded evaporator require an oil recovery system to remove the small quantity
of lubricating and seal oil injected into the compressor, which will collect in the evaporator. Oil
coolers shall be provided on units which utilize the oil to remove some of the heat of compression.
Drives may be semi-hermetic or open in the same manner as centrifugal compressors. The machines

above)
Flooded shell and tube type
(4) Condensers
Condensers shall be either of the following types, as required in the design:
(a) Water-Cooled Shell and Tube Type Condensers:
Condenser pressure control shall be maintained by controlling cooling water temperature. This shall
be achieved by by-passing the cooling tower to give constant flow through the condenser at varying
temperature, and prevents low water velocities through the tubes which could lead to increased
fouling. Throttling water flow through the condenser is not acceptable as this causes surging in the
compressor.
(b) Air-Cooled Type Condensers:
The large sized units shall generally be arranged with the coils in a flat horizontal configuration with
vertical air flow to present the lowest profile least affected by wind conditions.
The large units, condenser pressure control shall be achieved by varying the air flow over the tubes.
i.e., by fan speed control. In similar units, it shall be achieved by causing liquid refrigerant to
partially fill the tubes and thereby reduce the effective cooling surface. This method calls for a
receiver to store the additional refrigerant,
For refrigerants and coils, refer to Section 2.1 above.
(5) Chilled Water Pumps
Chilled water pumps shall be skid-mounted and assembled as an one-piece. They shall be completely
factory-assembled, tested and delivered so as to be ready to operate by the pump manufacturer under his
sole responsibility.
A cooling/heating water service pump associated with HVAC applications shall generally be of single stage
centrifugal type having a backward curved vaned impeller fitted in volute shaped casing to provide
maximum conversion of kinetic energy into pressure energy. A large capacity of the pump shall be of
“Split Casing” type.
The pumps shall be provided with mechanical seals and heavy duty ball bearings in combination with
sleeve bearings as applicable. All pump materials in contact with water shall be selected in accordance
with electro potential tables to avoid corrosive or electrolytic attack.
Pumps, motors and associated drives shall be readily accessible for operation, maintenance and repairs.
(6) Expansion Tanks
Expansion tank shall be of hermatic type and shall have diaphragm control. The expansion tank shall be
manufactured of carbon steel.
(7) Holding Tanks
Holding tank shall be provided for the chilled water circuit to avoid frequent switching on and off of the
water chilling unit. The holding tank shall be manufactured of carbon steel.
