3 Read the following text, then answer the questions:
A Recycling is the process of turning waste into new materials. For 6
example, used paper can be turned into paperboard, which can be
used to make book covers. Recycling can reduce pollution, save materials, and
lower energy use. Yet, some argue that recycling wastes energy. They believe
that collecting, processing, and converting waste uses more energy than
it saves. Still, most people agree that recycling is better for the planet than
landfilling.
Landfilling is the oldest method of managing waste. In its simplest form,
landfilling is when people put garbage in a hole. Large liners are placed in the
bottom of landfills so that toxic سامgarbage juice doesn’t get into the ground
water. Sadly, these liners don’t always work. Landfills may pollute the local
water supply. Not to mention that all of that garbage has a horrible smell.
Nobody wants to live next to a landfill. This makes it hard to find new locations
for landfills.

B There are many things we can do to save energy around our homes. Saving
energy reduces pollution which creates a healthier living environment. There
are many easy ways to save energy: Remember to turn off the lights when you’re
not using them. Turn off the TV, computer, and any other electrical device when
not in use. Don’t leave the refrigerator door open. When the refrigerator door
is left open, it has to work harder to keep the food cool. Keep the door closed
and keep the cool air in! Wash clothes at a cooler temperature. If you are feeling
cold, put on more clothing instead of turning up the heating. Have a shower
instead of a bath, this will save a lot of hot water.
The idea is just you need to change your daily routine to contribute in
saving the environment and the whole world.

B Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to land on the moon’s surface. There
was a video camera on the spacecraft that was filming the event for everyone
on Earth to see. When he set foot on the moon’s surface, he remarked, “That’s
one small step for man, one giant leap قفزةfor mankind.” He was the first human
being to ever set foot on another world.
Buzz Aldrin exited the spacecraft, the Eagle next. The two men discovered
that the moon’s surface was covered in a powdery dust. The two astronauts
found it easy to move around on the moon, even in their space suits, because
the moon’s gravity was less than Earth’s. Aldrin and Armstrong placed an
American flag on the moon. Next, they collected rocks and dust samples that
would be brought back to Earth for scientific study. They even got to talk to
President Nixon from the surface of the moon. They returned to the Earth safely.

B We all know that the ancient Egyptians built amazing pyramids and invented
many things that we use today. But what did they use to eat?
Archaeologists have discovered ancient recipes for bread. This was probably
eaten with vegetables, eggs and perhaps fruit and honey. It was usually cooked
in the ashes of open fires. People ate the same fruit and vegetables that are
grown by the Nile today. Onions were probably used as a medicine. Most people
probably ate small birds and fish. Milk and cheese were also eaten. Only the rich
people ate meat from larger animals, although meat was probably eaten on
special days even by poor people. Archaeologists now think that their diet was
so good that it helped ancient Egypt to become successful and powerful.

C Mars has been studied for hundreds of years. Astronomers say that it is the
planet which is most like the earth. A day on Mars is nearly the same as it is on
earth. It lasts for 24 hours and 39 minutes. However, a year lasts for one year
and 320 days, so a year on Mars is nearly twice as long as a year on earth. If you
looked at Mars through a telescope, you might see a very big mountain. It is
more than 20 kilometres high. That is three times as big as Everest! Scientists
say that if you went to Mars, you might find water under the surface. However,
living on Mars would not be easy. In summer, the temperature is usually minus
5°C and in winter it can be minus 82°C!
A) Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
1 What’s the passage mainly about?
a) Astronomers. b) The earth.
c) The telescope. d) Facts about Mars.
2 A ....................... makes things that are far away look nearer.
a) telescope b) satellite
c) lens d) gravity
3 What do you think that the word “surface” means?

D The Paralympic Games are like the Olympic Games but they are for disabled
people. They take place every four years. The Paralympics started small then
got bigger and bigger. The first games were held in 1948 when patients from a
hospital in England competed with other patients from other hospitals. Most of
the competitors were in wheel-chair. In 1976, the games included blind people
and people without arms or legs. But after1988, the games were televised and
seen all over the world. Today over 3.500 athletes from 100 countries take part
in the Paralympic Events including basketball, athletics, swimming and “goal
ball”- a form of football – played by blind people.

kingdom was wealthy and powerful, from about 1502 to 1482 B.C. Of all the female

The Eagle is a poem written by the Englishman Alfred Lord Tennyson
that uses personification. It is one of Tennyson’s shortest poems. It is composed
of only two stanzas, with three lines each. However, it is full of figurative
language and deeper meaning. The poem has a very simple concept. It focuses

on one eagle alone in the wild. In the first line, the eagle is atop a mountain. He
is high up where no other animal or human can go. He is alone in his world, with
the sun and the bright blue sky forming the perfect background scenery.
The second stanza shows the only action of the eagle. The first and second
lines show that, as he watches a mountain, the sea moves below him. Then, in
the final line, the eagle makes a dive towards the sea. The poem ends here, with
the reader not quite sure why the eagle dived off his mountain.
