A The giant panda has a special white head with black eye patches, 6
ears and shoulders. Giant pandas live in the bamboo forests of China
for millions of years and have been honoured by the Chinese for a very long time.
In the wild, giant pandas spend most of their time resting, eating or looking
for food. Unlike other bear species, giant pandas do not hibernate during the
winter months. They shelter in caves and trees. Pandas are good climbers. They
can also swim, though they spend most of their time on land.
Today, giant pandas are at risk of becoming extinct. Only about 1,000 giant
pandas are left in the wild. All of these inhabit a small area in the bamboo
forests of China. About 150 live in captivity. This is why the giant panda is
listed as endangered in the World Conservation Union’s Red List of Threatened
Animals. It is one of the most severely endangered species in the world.

B All the tropical rainforests are near the Equator. Most of them are in the Tropics.
The biggest tropical rainforest is the Amazon rainforest in South America. The
second biggest is the Congo rainforest in Africa. There are smaller rainforests in
Central America, Madagascar, India and Australia.
Tropical rainforests cover only about 6 percent (%) of Earth, but they have
50% of all the different types of animals and plants that we know. About 10
square kilometres of rainforest can have 750 types of trees, 1,500 types of
plants, 400 types of birds, and 150 types of butterflies. However, today, the
world’s rainforests are in danger.
More than half have been destroyed. As the destruction continues, scientists
fear the world’s remaining 2.5 billion acres ‫ فدان‬may soon disappear.
Many of the medicines now used to treat illnesses and diseases come from
plants that grow in the rainforest. Entire forests have been cut down and
changed into fields for animals.
Rainforests are beautiful and important places. Save the rainforests!

there’s a solution to the global environmental problem. The world’s
population is now too high, and the amount of energy being used is increasing
all the time. Isn’t it obvious that one day soon we’re going to run out of natural
resources?
Global warming shows us the effect that human beings are already having
on the planet - it’s happening because of all the greenhouse gases we put into
the atmosphere from industry, planes and cars and because of other things
like deforestation. Soon, millions of people will start leaving some parts of the
world because it will be impossible to live there anymore, which in turn will
create a whole new set of problems. So, people just need to be made aware of
the problem and shown ways in which they can help.

B Earthquakes are natural disasters that humans cannot control. Sometimes
earthquakes can be very dangerous and people need to know more about
where earthquakes come from, and how to protect themselves from them and
any other natural disasters.
Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface.
More than a million occur in the world each year. Earthquakes can be felt over
large areas although they usually last less than a minute. To tell the strength of an
earthquake, scientists use a scale called the Moment Magnitude Scale ‫مقياس شدة العزم‬
or MMS (it used to be called the Richter scale). However, earthquakes cannot be
predicted although scientists are still working on the problem.
Shaking and ground breaking are the main effects created by earthquakes,
principally resulting in more or less severe damage to buildings and other
structures. Ground break is a major risk for large engineering structures such as
dams, bridges and nuclear power stations.

3 Read the following text, then answer the questions:
A Recycling is the process of turning waste into new materials. For 6
example, used paper can be turned into paperboard, which can be
used to make book covers. Recycling can reduce pollution, save materials, and
lower energy use. Yet, some argue that recycling wastes energy. They believe
that collecting, processing, and converting waste uses more energy than
it saves. Still, most people agree that recycling is better for the planet than
landfilling.
Landfilling is the oldest method of managing waste. In its simplest form,
landfilling is when people put garbage in a hole. Large liners are placed in the
bottom of landfills so that toxic ‫ سام‬garbage juice doesn’t get into the ground
water. Sadly, these liners don’t always work. Landfills may pollute the local
water supply. Not to mention that all of that garbage has a horrible smell.
Nobody wants to live next to a landfill. This makes it hard to find new locations
for landfills.

B There are many things we can do to save energy around our homes. Saving
energy reduces pollution which creates a healthier living environment. There
are many easy ways to save energy: Remember to turn off the lights when you’re
not using them. Turn off the TV, computer, and any other electrical device when
not in use. Don’t leave the refrigerator door open. When the refrigerator door
is left open, it has to work harder to keep the food cool. Keep the door closed
and keep the cool air in! Wash clothes at a cooler temperature. If you are feeling
cold, put on more clothing instead of turning up the heating. Have a shower
instead of a bath, this will save a lot of hot water.
The idea is just you need to change your daily routine to contribute in
saving the environment and the whole world.

A It is usual to open an umbrella when it rains. But actually, the umbrella 6

shade against the sun. Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella
was used in very ancient times. The first people to use it were probably the
Chinese in the eleventh century B.C. The umbrella spread to ancient Egypt and
Babylon. At that time, it was a symbol of honour and authority, the umbrella
was only for royalty or by those in high offices.
It is believed that the first people to use the umbrella as protection against
rain were the ancient Romans. By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was
used against rain in most of Europe and started to become popular worldwide.
Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time; however, it

B Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to land on the moon’s surface. There
was a video camera on the spacecraft that was filming the event for everyone
on Earth to see. When he set foot on the moon’s surface, he remarked, “That’s
one small step for man, one giant leap ‫ قفزة‬for mankind.” He was the first human
being to ever set foot on another world.
Buzz Aldrin exited the spacecraft, the Eagle next. The two men discovered
that the moon’s surface was covered in a powdery dust. The two astronauts
found it easy to move around on the moon, even in their space suits, because
the moon’s gravity was less than Earth’s. Aldrin and Armstrong placed an
American flag on the moon. Next, they collected rocks and dust samples that
would be brought back to Earth for scientific study. They even got to talk to

Advertisements can be created to convince ‫ يقنع‬people to buy or give support

It is very important for me to have a good education. Most job fields require

To get a good job that will make good money will require me to go thorough

B We all know that the ancient Egyptians built amazing pyramids and invented
many things that we use today. But what did they use to eat?
Archaeologists have discovered ancient recipes for bread. This was probably
eaten with vegetables, eggs and perhaps fruit and honey. It was usually cooked
in the ashes of open fires. People ate the same fruit and vegetables that are
grown by the Nile today. Onions were probably used as a medicine. Most people
probably ate small birds and fish. Milk and cheese were also eaten. Only the rich
people ate meat from larger animals, although meat was probably eaten on

C Mars has been studied for hundreds of years. Astronomers say that it is the
planet which is most like the earth. A day on Mars is nearly the same as it is on
earth. It lasts for 24 hours and 39 minutes. However, a year lasts for one year
and 320 days, so a year on Mars is nearly twice as long as a year on earth. If you
looked at Mars through a telescope, you might see a very big mountain. It is
more than 20 kilometres high. That is three times as big as Everest! Scientists
say that if you went to Mars, you might find water under the surface. However,
living on Mars would not be easy. In summer, the temperature is usually minus

Egyptian archaeologists announced a mummy discovered in 1903 5
of Queen Hatshepsut (hat-shep-soot), Egypt’s most powerful female
pharaoh. The mummy was discovered more than a century ago, it remained in a
tomb until this past spring, when it was brought to the Cairo Museum for testing.

64
Al-Azhar Review

Queen Hatshepsut was the only woman to rule ancient Egypt while the
kingdom was wealthy and powerful, from about 1502 to 1482 B.C. Of all the female
pharaohs, Hatshepsut’s reign ‫ عهد‬was the longest and most successful. Many
historians believe that Tuthmose III, Hatshepsut’s stepson, destroyed records and
monuments bearing her name. It may have been his revenge. It is believed that
she stole the throne from him. Finding the mummy of this powerful queen may
provide details about an important part of Egyptian history.

Writing text messages while walking is dangerous. Walking in a 5
straight line is not easy. We can forget how to walk properly. Dangerous
things can happen. We run into people or cars. We fall over things in the street.
For example, people cannot see when they look at their keyboard. Their minds
are somewhere else – they are not thinking about walking safely. Thousands of
people have accidents. Some have serious head injuries.
Running is good for our health. A recent study says that running too much

runners had hard parts in their heart.

Grasslands, underwater habitats, and wetlands are also in danger of habitat

loss. For example, about half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared in the

habitat destruction. Some scientists think that if we put aside half of Earth’s
land and water for nature, we could save up to 90 percent of all species. In the
meantime, your everyday actions can build a better planet.

Public buildings are set to become smarter and aware of their environment.
