BRONCHODILATORS

• drugs that dilate the bronchi and bronchioles, increasing airflow to the lungs
• make breathing easier by widening the bronchi and relaxing the muscles in the lungs
• most useful in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• most commonly used as inhalation, although oral dosage forms are also available

• NOTE
• Bronchodilators are frequently used in combination with corticosteroids (glucocorticoids) which have anti-inflammatory action.

Bronchodilators can be categorised according to the time of action into:

Short acting bronchodilators Long-acting bronchodilators

• used for a short-term relief from • used regularly to help control

sudden unexpected attacks of breathlessness in asthma and COPD
breathlessness

• rapid onset of action (within 20 seconds • slow onset of action (within 30 minutes)
to 5 minutes)

• relieve symptoms for 3 to 4 hours • relieve the symptoms for 12 hours

And according to the mode of action into:

Beta-2 agonists Anticholinergics Leukotriene-receptor antagonists

• relax the smooth muscles of the
bronchi by stimulating Beta-2
receptors
• usually inhaled (but also available in
tablets, syrups or in severe cases –
injections
• contraindicated in patients taking

inhibition of the cholinergic
receptors
• usually inhaled
• contraindications:

ü prostate cancer
ü glaucoma
(Montelukast)
• long-acting, used as adjuvant
therapy in asthma
• block the action of leukotrienes
which are inflammatory
mediators
• usually tablets or granules
• taken regularly may prevent an
attack of asthma, but are not able
to stop an attack that has already
started

• muscle tremor • muscle cramps
• headaches • cough
• insomnia • nausea
• dry mouth • vomiting
• tachycardia • diarrhoea
• heart palpitations

-drugs that relieve or control the symptoms of allergy, such as: itching, rash, hives, allergic rhinitis, hay fever, sneezing, watery, red or swollen eyes.

Never mix sedating antihistamines with CNS

Warning depressants, such as narcotic analgesics,
sedatives or alcohol.

It is best to take sedating antihistamines at

bedtime to minimize drowsiness during the
day. Take no more than one tablet a day if
possible.
