PRECALCULUS - MODULE 2
Learning Competencies:
DEFINITION:

A parabola is a set of
all points in the plane
equidistant from a fixed-
point F and a fixed line 𝑙
not containing F. The
fixed-point F is called
the focus and the fixed
line 𝑙 is called the
directrix.
oThe line perpendicular to the directrix and
passing through the focus F is called the axis of
symmetry. The parabola is said to be symmetric
with respect to this line.
oThe chord that passes through the focus and
perpendicular to the axis of symmetry is called
the latus rectum.
oThe point on the parabola midway between the
latus rectum and the directrix is the vertex of the
parabola. The vertex is the point where the
curve changes direction.
Example: Given the equation of the parabola (𝑦 + 3)' = 4(𝑥 + 5).
Find the vertex, focus, axis of symmetry, directrix, length of the latus
rectum and its endpoints and sketch the graph.
Example: Given the equation of the parabola (𝑥 + 2)' = −8(𝑦 + 4).
Find the vertex, focus, axis of symmetry, directrix, length of the latus
rectum and its endpoints and sketch the graph.
Example 3. Write the standard equation of the parabola
given the vertex at (−2,3) and the focus at (−4,3).
Write the standard equation of the parabola given the vertex
at (0,2) and the directrix 𝑦 = 1.
