VIBRATION

DEFINITION :
• This procedure consist of fine vibration , or shaking movements
communicated to the body through the hands of the masseur.

PROCEDURE :
• One or both the hands may be placed against the surface (or) may grasp
some part of the patient like hand , foot , head.

• Vibratory movements can be communicated in various parts of the body.

TYPES :
1) Lateral vibration

2) Knuckle vibration

3) Superficial vibration

4) Deep vibration

5) Shaking

6) Digital vibration

Explanation follows up;

1) Lateral vibration :
• The palmar surface of the hand being held upon the skin with sufficient
firmness to prevent slipping.
• Hand is moved laterally to and fro.
• Movement should be rapid as possible
• Rate : 6 – 10 per seconds

• Location : Chiefly in head , joints , abdomen , pelvis

Finger tip is used for head and joints
Palmar surface is used for abdomen and pelvic massage

2) Knuckle vibration :
• The knuckles of the closed hand are placed in contact with the skin
• Then move slowly over the surface then give vigorous vibratory
movement being being executed

3) Superficial vibration :
• One or both palms being placed upon the surface , they are made to
move slowly over the area to be operated on
• Simultaneously give a fine trembling (to shake) movement
• Much practice is required for masseur to perform this movement with
sufficient vigor to produce an effect

4) Deep vibration :
• The palm of the hand (or) the closed fist being placed firmly upon the
surface of the part to be acted upon
• The arms are held straight , by locking the elbows
• A fine jarring or trembling movement is given by the flexor and
extensor muscles of masseur forearm
• This movement is difficult to produce , requires lomg practice
• But one of the most valuable of all the vibratory movements
• Its motion is can be communicated to most deeply seated parts of the
body

5) Shaking :
• The parts to be operated is grasped firmly by both the hands of
masseur

• And shaken with a rapid vibratory movement

• This movement is especially applicable to the extremities and the
head

6) Digital vibration :
• The end of thr thumb (or) one or more fingers being placed upon the
parts to be operated upon
• The arms of the masseur is thrown into violent vibration, by which
that vibration is communicated through the thumb or finger of masseur to
the patient

Physiological effect :
• The special effect of vibration is stimulation

• When applied with vigor, its is one of the most stimulating of all
procedure of massage

• Deep vibration if given forcefully gives effects on deeply suited organs

• The effect ofrapid vibration is some what similar to that of electricity ,

which is capable of of causing muscle contraction

• Very rapid vibration produce a pleasurable , tingling sensation in the

parts acted upon

• Vibratory movements – increases the circulation

Dilates the blood vessels

Rises the temperature

Pleasurable glow

Sensation of well – being

• These all effects are pervades the parts given with vibration

Therapeutic Application :
Contra-inticated in cases like :

Hyperaesthesia

Acute Inflammation

Febrile action

Morbid growths

Suppuration

Indicated in :

• Usefull in cases in which requires stimulation :

Paresis

Paralysis

• Application of vibration in nerve trunk helps in

Neuralgia

Neurasthenia

Other functional nerve disorder accompanied by

diminished activity

• When applied to the spinal column , it helps in

Sclerosis
Degenerative disease of spinal cord

• The violent trembling of patient suffering from spinal sclerosis is

greatly relived

• Vibration in extremities helps in reliving :

Coldness due to spasm of the small vessels due to

vasomotor disturbance

Numbness

Tingling
