AKMAD: BADJAO BOY+

In Zamboanga City we commonly see Badjao children, they live in indigenous

communities in the coastal area of Rio Hondo. Among them is a boy named Akmad.
Badjao children’s lives are tied to the sea. They are skilled divers who hunt fish and sea
cucumbers and search for pearls. They lived on poverty. They live, learn and play in
houses and community schools on stilts.
On November 2012 the day that Super typhoon Pablo devastated the Philippines,
Zamboanga City is one of the affected areas. With strong howling winds and strong
waves that hit Akmad’s house constantly. Part of their roof and walls are blown away
together with most of their neighbors’ houses. Akmad’s family were afraid to what have
had happened to them as the typhoon continued to devastate the community. It
continued all night as they continued to pray to Allah for their safety as Typhoon Pablo
swept off the Badjao Village.
But the family of Akmad did not worry so much as they were prepared for the
catastrophe that is coming. He knew a typhoon is coming because of the weather
forecast and the government gave warnings to possible evacuation as the typhoon
progresses. They were prepared for they were able to seek shelter in evacuation sites
that were provided by the government.
Now, came the morning Akmad’s family were all safe and sound due to accurate
forecast of PAGASA and the full support from the government.
