AUTHENTIC MORNING ADHKAR - Precious Gems From The Quran and Sunnah
Short excerpts from books of the Salaf and Dua's from the Quran & Sunnah
ARRIVAL OF MORNING
A Muslim is required to wake up for the morning prayer, whose time extends from dawn
until sunrise. Below, we cite the authentic athkār that are recommended for the morning.
Saying them starting from dawn, they provide protection for the whole day and supply a
Muslim with a great deal of rewards that will surely please him on Judgment Day.
It is important to note that most of the following athkār are similar to the evening and night
athkār, sometimes with just a slight variation of words to suit the morning.
WAKE-UP ADHKAR
Whenever a Muslim wakes up from sleep, he should express gratitude to Allah for allowing
him to live and continue worshiping Him.
Huthayfah and al-Bara ( ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢreported that when the Prophet ( )ﷺwoke up, he
would say:
ُ %ا َ ْلحَ مْ ُد =<َِ ا ;لذي أَحْ يَانَا بَ ْع َد مَا أَمَاتَنَا َو إِ َلي ِْه الن

Abu Hurayrah ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺrecommended for a Muslim to
say when he wakes up:
Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee ‘aafaanee fee jasadee, wa radda ‘alayya roohee, wa ‘athina lee
bithikrihi.
Praise be to Allah who granted me well-being in my body, returned my soul to me, and
permitted me to remember Him.

Those who needlessly sleep in the early morning deprive themselves from this blessing.
Therefore, some of the companions ( ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢconsidered this sleep an act of ignorance.
Khawwat Bin Jubayr ( عنه% )رضي اsaid:
“Sleeping in the beginning of the Day is ignorance, in its middle is a good quality, and in its
end is an imprudent act.”

If a person gets tired during the day, it is best for him to take a nap during the late morning
or early afternoon, even if for just a few minutes. This was the practice of the Prophet ()ﷺ
and his companions () رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ. Anas and Sahl Bin Sa‘d ( ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢreported:
“We used to pray Jumu‘ah and then take a nap (during the Prophet’s ( )ﷺtime.)”

Ayat-ul-Kursī (2:255) is the best āyah of the whole Qur’ān. It contains great description and
praise of Allah’s power, knowledge, and other sublime qualities.
Ubayy Bin Ka’b ( عنه% )رضي اnarrated that he had a harvest of dates that was unexplainably
shrinking every day. Keeping a close watch over it, he found the thief to be a jinni that
resembled an adolescent boy, but with skin and paws similar to a dog’s. Ubayy had a brief
discourse with this jinni and then asked him, “What would protect us from your kind?” The
jinni replied:
“This ayah from Sūrat ul-Baqarah, ‘Allahu lā ilaha illa huw-al-hayy-ul-qayyūm, whoever
says it in the evening, he will be protected from us until the morning, and whoever says it in
the morning, he will be protected from us until the evening.”
In the morning. Ubayy came to the Prophet ( )ﷺand told him about this. The Prophet ()ﷺ

The Mu’awwithāt (Protectors) are the last three sūrahs of the Qur’ān: al-Ikhlās, al-Falaq, and
an-Nās
Specifically, the “Mu’awwithatān” (Two Protectors) are the last two sūrahs of the Qur’ān.
They are thus named because, by saying them, a Muslim beseeches Allāh’s protection from
all sorts of harm and evil.
:
Reciting the Mu’awwithāt three times in the morning provides a protection from all harm
during the day.
“Abdullah Bin Khubayb al-Juhanī ( عنه% )رضي اreported that he went with other men on a
dark and rainy night seeking the Prophet ( )ﷺto lead them in prayer. When they met him,
the Prophet ( )ﷺsaid to Khubayb, “Say!” Not knowing what to say, Khubayb remained
silent. The Prophet ( )ﷺmade the same demand two more times. On the third time,
Khubayb said, “O Allāh’s Messenger, what should I say?” The Prophet ( )ﷺreplied:
“Say: “Qul huw-Allāhu ahad” and the Mu’awwithātān, three times in the evening and in
the morning. This should protect you from all (harmful) things.”

There are important distinctions between the manner of saying these three surahs in the
morning (or evening) and between reciting them when going to sleep. This is indicated in
the following table:

thunooba ‘illaa ‘Anta.
O Allāh, You are my Lord, and there is no (true) god but You. You created me, and I am
Your servant, and I try to fulfill my covenant and promise to You as much as I am able. I
seek Your protection from the evil of my doings. I admit to Your favor upon me, and I
confess my sins to You, so forgive me, because no one forgives sins but You.
The Prophet ( )ﷺadded: Whoever says it with certitude in the morning and dies during
the day before the evening, he will reside in Jannah. And whoever says it with certitude
in the evening and dies during the night before the morning, he will reside in Jannah.”

Abū ‘Ayyāsh ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “Whoever says this in the
morning, it will equate for him freeing one slave from Isma’il’s offspring, ten good deeds
will be recorded for him, ten sins will be removed from his record, he will be raised ten
ranks (in Jannah), and he will be protected from Satan until the evening.
And if he says it in the evening, he will receive similar (rewards) until the morning.”
Abū Ayyūb al-Anşārī ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: “Whoever says this
ten times in the morning, Allah will record for him for every time ten good deeds, will
remove from his record ten sins, and will raise him ten ranks (in Jannah); they will also
count for him as freeing ten slaves, Allah will protect him from Satan, they will be an
armored protection for him from the beginning to the end of the day, and he will not be
able to do a deed that can override them. If he says this in the evening, he will receive
similar (rewards).”

(Sahih-ut-Targhib 660 and as-Sahihah 114)]
Also from another narration it is highly recommended to say it ten times after the Fajr and
Magrib prayer
The Messenger of Allaah ( )ﷺsaid, “Whoever says at the end of every Fajr prayer (the
above dhikr), while his feet are still folded, before speaking: ten times, then ten good
deeds shall be written for him, ten evil deeds shall be wiped away from him, ten degrees
shall be raised up for him, and he shall be in security all that day from every disliked
thing—and he shall be in protection from Shaitaan—, and no sin will meet him or
destroy him that day, except for associating partners with Allaah.” [With a similar
narration for Magrib prayer. See Saheeh at-Targheeb 472 & 473. See here

La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lah-ul mulku wa-lah-ul-hamd, wa-huwa ‘ala
kulli shay ‘in qadir.
(There is no (true) god except Allāh, alone, without any partners. To Him belongs the
dominion, He is worthy of all praise, and He is capable of everything.)
Abu Hurayrah and ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Amr ( ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺsaid:
“Whoever says this one hundred times in the morning (and one hundred in the evening),
it will count for him as freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds will be recorded for
him, one hundred sins will be removed from his record, and it will shelter him from
Satan until the evening; and no one will come (on Judgment Day) with a better deed
except for a person who superceded him (in saying it).”
[Abu Hurayrah’s report is recorded by al-Bukhari (3293, 6403) and Muslim (2691). Ibn
Amr’s report mentions the evening (between brackets) and is recorded by an Nasā’ī,
Ahmad, and others; it was verified to be hasan by al-Albānī (as-Sahihah 2762 and Sahih-ut-
Targhib 658)]
This extolment has such a great significance that saying it even one time is highly
rewardable provided that it is said with full attention and submission to Allah.

I seek Your protection from its evil, the evil that preceded it, and the evil that succeeds it.
3. Abu Said ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺtold him:

Should I not teach you words that if you say them Allāh ( )ﷻwill alleviate your worries and
pay off your debts? Say in the morning and evening, ‘O Allāh, I seek Your protection from
worries and sadness, weakness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, and from being
overcome by debt or subdued by men.’
“He who says salāh upon me ten times in the morning and ten in the evening will attain my
intercession on Resurrection Day.”
[Recorded by at-Tabarānī. Verified to be weak by al-Albani (ad-Da īfah 5788 and Da’if-ut-
Targhib 396)]
Of course, it is highly recommended to frequently say salāh (and salām) upon the Prophet
()ﷺ, not limiting ourselves to the ten times specified in this weak hadīth. Allah (ُسبْ َحانَه
ُ
ٰ ) َوتَ َعا َلىsays:
“Allāh ( )عزوجلinforms his servants of the status that He granted to His Servant and
Messenger among the most supreme creation in that the angels bestow salāh upon him.
Allāh then commands the inferior world to bestow salāh and salām upon him so that
praising him will come together from both the superior and inferior worlds.” [Tafsir-ul-
Qur’ān-il-‘Azim 33:56]
“Right after Allah ( )تبارك و تعالىexpresses that He and His angels bestow salah upon him
( عليه وسلم%)صلى ا, He commands (the believers) to bestow salah upon him as well. This
means: if Allāh and His angels bestow salah upon His Messenger, you (believers) are more
apt to bestow upon him salah and frequent salām because of the high honor in the first and
last lives that reaches you through the blessing and goodness of his message.” [Jalā -ul-
Afham p. 262 (Dār Ibn-ul-Jawzi, Dammam, 1417 (1997)]
Saying şalāh upon the Prophet ( )ﷺmeans: praying to Allah to praise, elevate, and bless
him. Abul-‘Aliyah (% )رحمه اsaid:
“Allah’s salah (upon His Messenger) is: praising him to the angels. And the angels’ salah
is: supplicating (to Allāh to bless him).”
[Cited firmly by al-Bukhari (just before no. 4797) as mu’allaq (without isnād). Verified to be
hasan by al-Albani (Fadl-us-Salāh 95). Abul-Aliyah Rafi Bin Mahran, one of the notable
tabi’in, received the knowledge from Ubayy Bin Ka’b, Ibn Abbas, Alī, and other companions
() رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ. He was born in the early years of Hijrah and died around 92 H.]
“(The angels) saying salah means: supplicating (to Allāh) to bless him.” [Cited firmly by
al-Bukhari (just before no. 4797) as mu’allaq (without isnād)]
Many authentic reports indicate that saying şalāh and salām upon the Prophet ( )ﷺis a
highly rewardable act of worship. For instance, Abu Hurayrah ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the
Prophet ( )ﷺsaid:
“Whoever invokes salah on me one time, Allah bestows salah on him ten times.”
[Recorded by Muslim (408), Abu Dawud, and others]
Based on the above ayah, it is recommended to entwine between saying salāh and saying
salām upon the Prophet ()ﷺ. The shortest form of this can be:
ع َلى النَ ِبي< مُحَ م; ٍد
َ س <ل ْم َ ال ;ل ُه ;م
َ ص <ل َو
:
Allāhumma salli wa-sallim alan-Nabiyyi Muhammad.
However, if time permits, it is preferable to say one the longer forms of salāh upon the
Prophet that are said at the end of each prayer, as was reported by Ka’b Bin ‘Ujrah, Abü
Sa’īd al-Khudrī, Abū Hamīd as-Sā’idī, and others () رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ. [Recorded by al-Bukhari
(4797-4799 (tel:4797-4799)), Muslim (4061), etc.]
5. Zayd Bin Thābit ( عنه% )رضي اreported that the Prophet ( )ﷺinstructed a man to say every
morning the following (long) extolment and teach it to his family:

It should be noted that all parts of this hadīth are contained in other authentic hadīths and
extolments, and no part of it carries unacceptable meaning. Therefore, it is permissible to
say it as a catch-all extolment without assuming or believing that it was said, in this form,
by the Prophet ()ﷺ.
