AUTHENTIC MORNING ADHKAR

ARRIVAL OF MORNING
A Muslim is required to wake up for the morning prayer, whose time extends from dawn
until sunrise. Below, we cite the authentic athkār that are recommended for the morning.
Saying them starting from dawn, they provide protection for the whole day and supply a
Muslim with a great deal of rewards that will surely please him on Judgment Day.

It is important to note that most of the following athkār are similar to the evening and night
athkār, sometimes with just a slight variation of words to suit the morning.

WAKE-UP ADHKAR
Whenever a Muslim wakes up from sleep, he should express gratitude to Allah for allowing
him to live and continue worshiping Him.

Huthayfah and al-Bara (‫ ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬reported that when the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬woke up, he
would say:

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee ‘ahyaanaa ba’da maa ‘amaatanaa wa’ilayhin-nushoor.

Praise be to Allah who resurrected us after He made us die. And to Him will be the
(people’s) emergence (from graves)

EXCELLENCE OF THE EARLY MORNING

Muslims are urged to stay awake after the morning prayer, so as to benefit from the great
blessing of the early morning. Sakhr al-Ghamidi and other companions (‫) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬
reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

“O Allah, bless the early part of the day for my Ummah. ”

[Recorded by Abu Dawud, an-Nasa’i. and others. Verified to be authentic by al-Albani

(Sahih ul-Jami no. 1300 and Hidayat ur Ruwah no. 3831)]

Those who needlessly sleep in the early morning deprive themselves from this blessing.
Therefore, some of the companions (‫ ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬considered this sleep an act of ignorance.
Khawwat Bin Jubayr (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬said:

“Sleeping in the beginning of the Day is ignorance, in its middle is a good quality, and in its
end is an imprudent act.”

[Recorded by al-Bukhari (in al-Adab ul-Mufrad 1242) and verified to be authentic by al-
Albani]

If a person gets tired during the day, it is best for him to take a nap during the late morning
or early afternoon, even if for just a few minutes. This was the practice of the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬
and his companions (‫) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬. Anas and Sahl Bin Sa‘d (‫ ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬reported:

“We used to pray Jumu‘ah and then take a nap (during the Prophet’s (‫ )ﷺ‬time.)”

MORNING ADHKAR FROM THE QURAN

1. RECTING ĀYAT-UL-KURSI

Ayat-ul-Kursī (2:255) is the best āyah of the whole Qur’ān. It contains great description and
praise of Allah’s power, knowledge, and other sublime qualities.

It is recommended to recite Ayat-ul-Kursi every morning.

Ubayy Bin Ka’b (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬narrated that he had a harvest of dates that was unexplainably
shrinking every day. Keeping a close watch over it, he found the thief to be a jinni that
resembled an adolescent boy, but with skin and paws similar to a dog’s. Ubayy had a brief
discourse with this jinni and then asked him, “What would protect us from your kind?” The
jinni replied:

“This ayah from Sūrat ul-Baqarah, ‘Allahu lā ilaha illa huw-al-hayy-ul-qayyūm, whoever
says it in the evening, he will be protected from us until the morning, and whoever says it in
the morning, he will be protected from us until the evening.”

In the morning. Ubayy came to the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬and told him about this. The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬
said:

“The evil one has said the truth.”

[Recorded by an-Nasa’i, at-Tabarani, and others. Verified to be authentic by al-Albanī

(Sahih-ut-Targhīb 662 and as-Sahihah 3245). Shaykh Mohammad Jibaly says: Al-Albani had
a doubt about the part of this hadith that specifies morning and evening, but this was also
shown to be acceptable by Abul-Hasan as-Sulaymānī al-Ma’ribí]

2. RECITING THE MU’AWWITHAT

The Mu’awwithāt (Protectors) are the last three sūrahs of the Qur’ān: al-Ikhlās, al-Falaq, and
an-Nās

Specifically, the “Mu’awwithatān” (Two Protectors) are the last two sūrahs of the Qur’ān.
They are thus named because, by saying them, a Muslim beseeches Allāh’s protection from
all sorts of harm and evil.
:
Reciting the Mu’awwithāt three times in the morning provides a protection from all harm
during the day.

“Abdullah Bin Khubayb al-Juhanī (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that he went with other men on a
dark and rainy night seeking the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬to lead them in prayer. When they met him,
the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said to Khubayb, “Say!” Not knowing what to say, Khubayb remained
silent. The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬made the same demand two more times. On the third time,
Khubayb said, “O Allāh’s Messenger, what should I say?” The Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬replied:

“Say: “Qul huw-Allāhu ahad” and the Mu’awwithātān, three times in the evening and in
the morning. This should protect you from all (harmful) things.”

There are important distinctions between the manner of saying these three surahs in the
morning (or evening) and between reciting them when going to sleep. This is indicated in

11. A TAHLĪL OF GREAT REWARDS AND STRONG PROTECTION

An extolment that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬recommended saying in the morning and evening is the
following tahlil:

La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lah-ul- mulku wa-lah-ul-hamd, yuhyi wa-yumit,
wa-huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir.

(There is no (true) god except Allah, alone, without any partners. To Him belongs the
dominion, He is worthy of all praise, He gives life and death, and He is capable of
everything.)

Abū ‘Ayyāsh (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “Whoever says this in the
morning, it will equate for him freeing one slave from Isma’il’s offspring, ten good deeds
will be recorded for him, ten sins will be removed from his record, he will be raised ten
ranks (in Jannah), and he will be protected from Satan until the evening.

And if he says it in the evening, he will receive similar (rewards) until the morning.”

[Recorded by Abū Dāwūd, an-Nasa’ī, and others. Verified to be authentic by al-Albani

(Sahih-ut-Targhib 656)]

Abū Ayyūb al-Anşārī (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: “Whoever says this
ten times in the morning, Allah will record for him for every time ten good deeds, will
remove from his record ten sins, and will raise him ten ranks (in Jannah); they will also
count for him as freeing ten slaves, Allah will protect him from Satan, they will be an
armored protection for him from the beginning to the end of the day, and he will not be
able to do a deed that can override them. If he says this in the evening, he will receive
similar (rewards).”
:
[Recorded by Ahmad, an-Nasa’i, and at-Tabarani. Verified to be authentic by al-Albani
(Sahih-ut-Targhib 660 and as-Sahihah 114)]

Also from another narration it is highly recommended to say it ten times after the Fajr and
Magrib prayer

The Messenger of Allaah (‫ )ﷺ‬said, “Whoever says at the end of every Fajr prayer (the
above dhikr), while his feet are still folded, before speaking: ten times, then ten good
deeds shall be written for him, ten evil deeds shall be wiped away from him, ten degrees
shall be raised up for him, and he shall be in security all that day from every disliked
thing—and he shall be in protection from Shaitaan—, and no sin will meet him or
destroy him that day, except for associating partners with Allaah.” [With a similar
narration for Magrib prayer. See Saheeh at-Targheeb 472 & 473. See here
(https://preciousgemsfromthequranandsunnah.wordpress.com/2018/12/08/an-amazing-
duaa-not-to-be-missed-after-fajr-and-maghrib-for-protection-from-shaytan/) for complete
narration]

A slightly shorter version of the above extolment is the following:

La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lah-ul mulku wa-lah-ul-hamd, wa-huwa ‘ala
kulli shay ‘in qadir.

(There is no (true) god except Allāh, alone, without any partners. To Him belongs the
dominion, He is worthy of all praise, and He is capable of everything.)

Abu Hurayrah and ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Amr (‫ ) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:
“Whoever says this one hundred times in the morning (and one hundred in the evening),
it will count for him as freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds will be recorded for
him, one hundred sins will be removed from his record, and it will shelter him from
Satan until the evening; and no one will come (on Judgment Day) with a better deed
except for a person who superceded him (in saying it).”

[Abu Hurayrah’s report is recorded by al-Bukhari (3293, 6403) and Muslim (2691). Ibn
Amr’s report mentions the evening (between brackets) and is recorded by an Nasā’ī,
Ahmad, and others; it was verified to be hasan by al-Albānī (as-Sahihah 2762 and Sahih-ut-
Targhib 658)]

This extolment has such a great significance that saying it even one time is highly
rewardable provided that it is said with full attention and submission to Allah.

Abd-ur-Rahmān Bin Abzā (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬taught his

13. FOUR EXTOLMENTS THAT OUTWEIGH MANY OTHERS

Juwayriyah (‫ عنها‬%‫ )رضى ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬once left her house, after the
morning prayer, while she was sitting in her prayer spot extolling Allah (‫)ﷺ‬. He returned in
the mid-morning and found her still doing the same. He asked her, “Are you still in the
same sitting since I left you?” She replied, “Yes.” He said:

“Indeed, I said after I left you four extolments, three times. If you weigh them against
what you have said since the morning, they will outweigh it:”

14. A DECLERATION OF FAITH THAT LEADS TO JANNAH

Al-Munaythir (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

admit him into Jannah.”

15. A TESTIMONY THAT FREES FROM THE FIRE

Anas (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever says in the morning or evening (the following), Allah frees a quarter of him
from the Fire. If he says it twice, Allah frees half of him from the Fire. If he says it thrice,
Allah frees three quarters of him from the Fire. And if he says it four times, Allāh frees
him entirely from the Fire.”

angels, and all of Your creation, that You are Allāh, there is no (true) god except You,

Messenger.)

[This hadīth was recorded by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmithi, and others, and was verified to be
weak by al-Albani (Daif-ut-Targhib 383, ad-Da’ifah 1041, and al-Kalim-u Tayyib 25). Shaykh
Mohammad Jibaly says: A similar hadith from Anas, recorded by al-Hakim, divides the
freed parts into three instead of four, and does not specify morning or evening. Although
this latter hadith was verified to be acceptable by al-Albani (as-Sahihah 267), he had some
concern about one of its narrators. Yet, the hadith we are citing here was verified to he
acceptable after a detailed analysis by Abul-Hasan as-Sulaymani and by others.]

morning has never entered except that I sought Allah’s forgiveness 100 times.”

(That is to say: ‘Astaghfirullaah’ – I seek the forgiveness of Allah or similar)

COMMON UNAUTHENTIC MORNING ADHKAR

GENERAL GUIDELINES

We present below a number of morning extolments that, though commonly recorded in

books and said by people, are based on unauthentic hadīths. This means that their isnāds
are weak, and does not necessarily mean that they carry unacceptable meanings. To the
contrary, they usually have good meanings, and may be authentic extolments but for other
occasions (ex., numbers 3 and 4 below). Therefore, we cite them here for two reasons:

a. Warn against falsely attributing them to the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬as morning extolments.

b. Warn against regularly saying them as morning extolments.

LISTING OF WEAK NARRATIONS

1. Abdullah Bin Ghannām (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬:

O Allāh, whatever favor reaches me or any of Your creation this morning, it is from You
alone. There is no partner to You; You deserve all praise and gratitude. Whoever says this in
the morning, he has surely done the necessary gratitude for that day. And whoever says
:
similarly in the evening, he has surely done the necessary gratitude for that night.

[Recorded by Abu Dawud 5073, an-Nasā’ī, and others. Verified to be weak by al-Albani (al-
Kalim-ul-Tayyib 26) & Da’eef Al-Jaami No. (5730)]

2. Abū Mālik al-Ash’ari (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬instructed his
companions to say in the morning:

‫ فتحه ونضره ونوره وبرگتة وهداه؛ و أعود بك من شر‬،‫ اللهم إني أسألك خير هذا اليوم‬.Yj‫ رب العا‬% ‫لك‬j‫أصبحنا وأصبح ا‬
‫ وشر ما بعده‬،‫ وشر ما قبله‬،‫ما فيه‬.»

We have reached the morning, and the dominion continues to belong to Allah, Lord of the
creation. O Allāh, I ask You for this day’s goodness, facility, success, light, and blessing; and
I seek Your protection from its evil, the evil that preceded it, and the evil that succeeds it.

[Recorded by Abu Dawūd, at-Tabarāni, and others. Verified to be weak by al Albani

(Sunanu Abī Dāwūd 5084 and ad-Daifah 5606)]

3. Abu Said (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬told him:
، َ‫صبَ ْحت‬ ْ َ ‫ ُق ْل إِذَا أ‬:‫ال‬

Should I not teach you words that if you say them Allāh (‫ )ﷻ‬will alleviate your worries and
pay off your debts? Say in the morning and evening, ‘O Allāh, I seek Your protection from
worries and sadness, weakness and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, and from being
overcome by debt or subdued by men.’

[Recorded by Abū Dāwūd 1555. Verified to be weak by al-Albāni (Hidāyat-ur-Ruwah 2383

and Da’ifu Abi Dāwūd 272b)]

4. Abu ad-Darda’ (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

‫شفَا َع ِتي يَ ْو َم ا ْل ِقيَا َم ِة‬

َ ‫ أ َ ْد َر َكت ْ ُه‬،‫ش ًرا‬ ِ ‫ يُ ْم‬Y

“He who says salāh upon me ten times in the morning and ten in the evening will attain my
intercession on Resurrection Day.”

[Recorded by at-Tabarānī. Verified to be weak by al-Albani (ad-Da īfah 5788 and Da’if-ut-
Targhib 396)]

Of course, it is highly recommended to frequently say salāh (and salām) upon the Prophet
(‫)ﷺ‬, not limiting ourselves to the ten times specified in this weak hadīth. Allah (ُ‫سبْ َحانَه‬
ُ

َ ‫ن‬ ; ِ‫إ‬
:
Indeed, Allāh and His angels bestow salah upon the Prophet. O you who believe, bestow
upon him salāh and frequent salām. [Al-Ahzab 33:56]

Commenting on this ayah, Ibn Kathir (%‫ )رحمه ا‬said:

“Allāh (‫ )عزوجل‬informs his servants of the status that He granted to His Servant and
Messenger among the most supreme creation in that the angels bestow salāh upon him.
Allāh then commands the inferior world to bestow salāh and salām upon him so that
praising him will come together from both the superior and inferior worlds.” [Tafsir-ul-
Qur’ān-il-‘Azim 33:56]

And Ibn-ul-Qayyim (%‫ )رحمه ا‬commented on this āyah, saying:

“Right after Allah (‫ )تبارك و تعالى‬expresses that He and His angels bestow salah upon him
He commands (the believers) to bestow salah upon him as well. This
means: if Allāh and His angels bestow salah upon His Messenger, you (believers) are more
apt to bestow upon him salah and frequent salām because of the high honor in the first and
last lives that reaches you through the blessing and goodness of his message.” [Jalā -ul-
Afham p. 262 (Dār Ibn-ul-Jawzi, Dammam, 1417 (1997)]

Saying şalāh upon the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬means: praying to Allah to praise, elevate, and bless
him. Abul-‘Aliyah (%‫ )رحمه ا‬said:

“Allah’s salah (upon His Messenger) is: praising him to the angels. And the angels’ salah
is: supplicating (to Allāh to bless him).”

[Cited firmly by al-Bukhari (just before no. 4797) as mu’allaq (without isnād). Verified to be
hasan by al-Albani (Fadl-us-Salāh 95). Abul-Aliyah Rafi Bin Mahran, one of the notable
tabi’in, received the knowledge from Ubayy Bin Ka’b, Ibn Abbas, Alī, and other companions
(‫) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬. He was born in the early years of Hijrah and died around 92 H.]

And Ibn ‘Abbās (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬explained:

“(The angels) saying salah means: supplicating (to Allāh) to bless him.” [Cited firmly by
al-Bukhari (just before no. 4797) as mu’allaq (without isnād)]

Many authentic reports indicate that saying şalāh and salām upon the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬is a
highly rewardable act of worship. For instance, Abu Hurayrah (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the
Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever invokes salah on me one time, Allah bestows salah on him ten times.”
[Recorded by Muslim (408), Abu Dawud, and others]

Based on the above ayah, it is recommended to entwine between saying salāh and saying
salām upon the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬. The shortest form of this can be:
‫ع َلى النَ ِبي< مُحَ م; ٍد‬
َ ‫س <ل ْم‬ َ ‫ال ;ل ُه ;م‬
َ ‫ص <ل َو‬
:
Allāhumma salli wa-sallim alan-Nabiyyi Muhammad.

O Allāh, grant praise and peace to the Prophet Muhammad.

However, if time permits, it is preferable to say one the longer forms of salāh upon the
Prophet that are said at the end of each prayer, as was reported by Ka’b Bin ‘Ujrah, Abü
Sa’īd al-Khudrī, Abū Hamīd as-Sā’idī, and others (‫) رﺿﻲ ﷲ ﻋﻨﮭﻢ‬. [Recorded by al-Bukhari
(4797-4799 (tel:4797-4799)), Muslim (4061), etc.]

5. Zayd Bin Thābit (‫ عنه‬%‫ )رضي ا‬reported that the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬instructed a man to say every
morning the following (long) extolment and teach it to his family:

ٍ ِ‫ير َح َلفْتُ ِم ْن َحل‬
