 Topic: :-Alcohol Detection And Engine Locking System Using Arduino Uno And Sensors.
Problem Statement -

Designing and prototyping a robust alcohol detection system using Arduino Uno
microcontrollers and appropriate sensor modules

Objective -

 The Alcohol Detection with Engine Locking system helps to reduce accidents which are
occurring due to drunk driving.
 The Chance of Loss of Life and Property due to Drunken driving Minimized. Less
Accidents, more safety.

Scope -

 As the growing public perception is that vehicle safety is more important, advances in
public safety is gaining acceptance than in the past.
 Future scope of this system is to control the accidents causes due to alcohol consumption.
This system improves the safety of human being.

Material Required –

 Buzzer

 MQ-3 Alcohol Sensor

 16x2 LCD Display

 Arduino UNO
Buzzer :

• An Arduino Buzzer is basically a beeper. The

Arduino buzzer is a device that produces sound
when an electric current is passed through it.

• The buzzer Arduino can be directly connected to

the Arduino and produce different tones by giving
different frequency electric pulses to the buzzer.

Specification :
Rated Voltage : 6V DC

Operating Voltage : 4 to 8V DC

Rated Current* : ≤30mA

Sound Output at 10cm* : ≥85dB

Resonant Frequency : 2300 ±300Hz

Tone : Continuous

Operating Temperature : -25°C to +80°C

Storage Temperature : -30°C to +85°C

Weight : 2g
MQ3 Gas Sensor :

• The MQ3 gas sensor is alcohol sensor which is used to

detect the alcohol concentration on your breath.
• This sensor provides an analog resistive output based on
alcohol concentration.
• The Grove - Gas Sensor(MQ3) module is useful for gas
leakage detection (in home and industry).
• It is suitable for detecting Alcohol, Benzine, CH4,
Hexane, LPG, CO. Due to its high sensitivity and fast

Specification :

 Supply Voltage: 5V
 Detecting Concentration:0.05-10mg/L
 Alcohol Analog and Digital Output Digital Out is High or Low based on a
adjustable preset threshold
LCD Display 16x12

A liquid crystal display, sometimes known as an LCD, is essentially a

display device made with liquid crystal technology. When creating projects
based on real-world electronics, we require a way to show output
values and messages.
Arduino UNO :

The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board that is used in various embedded

system applications. It is designed to perform functions with real-time computing
constraints and is known for its ease of operation.
The Arduino Uno is an open-source microcontroller board based on the Microchip
ATmega328P microcontroller (MCU) and developed by Arduino.cc and initially
released in 2010.[2][3] The microcontroller board is equipped with sets of digital
and analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion
boards (shields) and other circuits.[1] The board has 14 digital I/O pins (six
capable of PWM output), 6 analog I/O pins, and is programmable with the Arduino
IDE (Integrated Development Environment), via a type B USB cable.[4] It can be
powered by a USB cable or a barrel connector that accepts voltages between 7 and
20 volts, such as a rectangular 9-volt battery. It has the same microcontroller as the
Arduino Nano board, and the same headers as the Leonardo board.[5][6] The
hardware reference design is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution
Share-Alike 2.5 license and is available on the Arduino website. Layout and
production files for some versions of the hardware are also available.
Specification :

Digital I/O Pins: 14.

PWM Pins: 6 (Pin # 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11)

Analog Input Pins: 6.

DC Current per I/O Pin: 20 mA.

DC Current for 3.3V Pin: 50 mA.

Size: 68.6 mm x 53.4 mm.

Weight: 25 g.

ICSP Header: Yes.

Engine Locking and Alcohol Detection :

• When a drunk person breathes near the alcohol sensor it detects the ethanol
in his breathe and provides an output based on alcohol concentration

• The MQ3 alcohol sensor can detect alcohol concentrations ranging from 25
to 500 ppm. The sensor's analog output voltage (at the A0 pin) varies in
proportion to the alcohol concentration

• the alcohol sensor is used to monitor driver breath and constantly sends
signals to the microcontroller.
• The microcontroller on encountering high alcohol signal from the alcohol
sensor displays alcohol detection on LCD screen and also stops
the motor engine.

• MQ3 is a sensor which we have used for detection of alcohol. Now sensor
detect the presence of alcohol it passes signal to the main micro-controller
i.e., Arduino UNO board.

• The micro- controller sends these signals to buzzer and transistor and further
these signals are relayed to DC motor i.e., Engine through relay.
Conclusion :

• In conclusion, the alcohol detector and engine locking system is an

important safety feature that can potentially save lives and
prevent accidents
• Study or project on an alcohol detection and engine locking system
using Arduino Uno and sensors typically highlight its
effectiveness, safety benefits, compliance and enforcement
capabilities, adaptability, cost-effectiveness, user experience, and
potential for future improvements.
