What is the truth?

The Greek word for “truth” is aletheia, which refers to “divine revelation” and is related to a
word that literally means “that which cannot be hidden.” It conveys the idea that the truth is
always there, always open and available for everyone to see, with nothing being hidden or
obscured. The Hebrew word for “truth” is emeth, which means “firmness,” “constancy,” and
“duration.” Such a definition implies an eternal substance and something that can be trusted.
Nearly 2,000 years ago, a Roman governor asked a wrongly accused prisoner standing before
him, “What is truth?” The Roman's name was Pontius Pilate. The prisoner was Jesus of Nazareth
(John 18:37-38).
Jesus did not answer Pilate's question during this meeting. The Bible reports that Jesus went like
a silent sheep to the slaughter, he did not open his mouth against his shearers.
Christ had already answered the question in prayer to His Father.
What is truth? The definition of Jesus
The night before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed a heartfelt prayer to His Father on behalf of His
disciples – He said, “Sanctify them by Your word. Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
Jesus told the Jews who believed him, “If you continue in my word, you will truly be my
disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). Knowing
the truth freed Jesus' disciples and followers from deceptions, sins and false religious teachings.
Some say: everything is relative, so any statement can be true depending on your point of view.
But the Word of God is the ruler, the perfect plumb line that can measure whether something is
true or not.
Jesus is the truth. Jesus is the Word of God.
John 1:1 In the beginning, he who is the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the
Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 Through him God created all things,
and without him nothing was created. 4 He who is the Word possessed life, and his life brought
light to all. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never been able to put it out.
6 God sent a man named John 7 to speak about the light, so that through his testimony everyone
would believe. 8 He was not the light, but he came to speak of the light. 9 He who is the true
light, who enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He came into the world that he
created, but the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and they rejected
him. 12 But to all who believed in him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children
of God. 13 These were not born according to the natural order, nor as a result of passion[b] or
human will, but were born of God. 14 Thus, the Word became a human being, flesh and blood,
and dwelt among us. He was full of grace and truth. And we saw his glory, the glory of the only
Son of the Father.

The truth is that God created human beings in his image, he gave human beings the freedom to
obey God or their desires of greed, pleasure, and lust. Human beings chose to disobey, follow
their own path, sinning and disregarding the truth of the Word of God. God has provided a way
to save human beings from a life of slavery to sin and disobedience to return to God and find
meaning in their lives again, living in accordance with God.
John 3:16-21 ¹⁶ "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For God sent his Son into the world, not to
condemn the world, but that it might be saved through him. ¹⁸ Whoever believes in him is not
condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he does not believe
in the name of the Only Begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ This is the judgment: the light has come to the
world, but men loved darkness and not the light, because their works were evil. ²⁰ Whoever does
evil hates the light and does not come to the light, for fear that his works will be revealed. ²¹ But
whoever practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be seen clearly that his works are
done through God."
Romans 5:6When we were completely helpless, Christ came at the right time and died for us
sinners. 7It is unlikely that anyone would die for a righteous person, although perhaps someone
would be willing to die for a good person. 8But God proves his great love to us by sending
Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9And since we have been declared righteous
through his blood, we will certainly be saved from the wrath of God through him.
1 John 2:15-17 15Do not love the world or what is in it. If anyone loves the world, the Father's
love is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and
the ostentation of possessions—comes not from the Father, but from the world. 17The world
and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
The word of God:
2 Peter 1:20-21 NLT 20 Above all, know that no prophecy in the Scriptures came from the
prophet's own understanding, 21 nor from human initiative. These men were moved by the Holy
Spirit and spoke from God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT All Scripture is inspired by God and useful in teaching us what is true
and in making us realize what is not in order in our lives. She corrects us when we make mistakes
and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people for every good
work.
What the Bible says about treatment in relationships:
1 Timothy 5:1-10 (NIV) Do not rebuke an old man harshly, but encourage him as if he were
your father. Exhort young people as brothers; elderly women, as mothers; the girls, like sisters,
with all purity. Treat widows who are truly in need appropriately.
The Bible gives powerful instructions for how God wants us to act, because the Bible is God's
truth for us:
Romans 12:9 Let love be unfeigned. Hate evil and cling to good. 10Love one another cordially
with brotherly love, preferring one another in honor. 11Do not be slow in care; be fervent in
spirit, serving the Lord; 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, persevere in prayer;
2
13communicate with the saints in their needs, follow hospitality; 14bless those who persecute
you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
16Be of one accord among yourselves; do not aspire to high things, but accommodate
yourselves to the humble; do not be wise in yourselves. 17Return evil for evil to no one; seek
things that are honest before all men. 18If it is possible, as much as it is within you, live at peace
with all men. 19Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but give place to wrath, for it is written:
Vengeance is mine; I will reward, says the Lord. 20Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed
him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by doing this you will heap coals of fire
on his head. 21Do not let yourself be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
I could talk about how a husband should treat his wife, a wife her husband, how parents should
treat their children, how children should honor and respect their parents, how we should respect
our headship and submit to it, how we should treat established authorities, how we should take
care of our body, our soul and our spirit. The truth of God's Word has all the answers we need
to have a life that pleases God, a blessed life.
Jesus Christ is the living verb, the Word of God, the Truth that frees!
Psalms 119
How I love your word; I think about her all day! 98 Your commandments make me wiser than
my enemies, for they always guide me. 99 Yes, I have more prudence than my teachers, because
I live meditating on your precepts. 100 I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey
your commands. 101 I refuse to walk in every evil way to obey your word. 102 I did not depart
from your statutes, for you taught me well. 103 How sweet are your words; They are sweeter
than honey! 104 Your commands give me discernment; That's why I hate every false path. 105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
The Word of God is the absolute truth!
May God give us love for his Word, may the Word of God be the ruler, the plumb line that
measures our life.
