Lesson Plan Project

Lesson Goals or Learning Targets (Word these as measurable student outcomes.)

Students will be able to understand PEMDAS and how different Mathematical equations can
have a different impact on the answer.

Lesson Objectives or Success Criteria (Word these as student actions, use verbs.)

Students will use the worksheet 1492 to experiment with PEMDAS and different Mathematical
equations to solve it.

Lesson Plan Content (Written narrative paragraph about the lesson content.)

I’m going to be put into different groups trying to help students to understand the importance
of PEMDAS. The lesson plan isn’t really to teach students what PEMDAS is instead, to
reinforce their learning to previous lessons. The homework is 1492 in which they try to use
1,4,9 and 2 In order to make the number 1 through 100. To do this, they must come up with
different equations to equal the different numbers from 1-100. I will have multiple students
who are having difficulty putting these equations together in the back table, explain to them
how PEMDAS could help them. As well as aid them by hinting to them what type of problems
have they been working on, all year long.
CCSS Rationale (Describe the specific Common Core State Standards addressed during the teaching
of this lesson plan.)

Although they are in 5th grade, I am still using some elements of 6th grade learning patterns for
mathematics as they are being shown and taught 6th grade level math. These elements are rigorous
elements of 6th grade mathematics and have advanced math for their age. For the grade criteria there
is still elements in where they are able to communicate with the teachers to better understand the topic
which I will be doing, as well as breaking the problem down if they need any assistance of any sort of
way. I am also still holding them accountable as if they were older students by not tolerating any
distracting behavior that could affect the students next to the distracting one.

Instructional Procedures

• Focusing Event (Describe how you will get students to focus attention on your teaching.)

I will use little snaps to get their attention since I don’t want to interrupt other students
during this time. (For example, I start snapping quietly and quickly then the students
respond by doing the same.)

• Instructional Strategies (Click into that link for help describing all instructional methods you will
employ during the lesson. Remember, instructional strategies fall into one or more of the following
broad categories: DIRECT, INDIRECT, EXPERIENTIAL, INTERACTIVE, INDEPENDENT
STUDY)

It is Interactive Learning, Experimental and Independent Study.

I say this because the worksheet we will be working on there is going to be a lot of
brainstorming involved in trying to complete. Many Trials and error which leads to
Experimental learning. They do this among their solves, however if they do want, they
can work as a group. However, during this time I will be available to help them out
whenever possible.

• Student Participation (How will you engage students and get them on board to participate?)
I will try to make it as fun as possible for them, most of the kids in the class love math,
but most importantly love a good challenge. So, helping them succeed in the
worksheet can help them feel some sort of accomplishment.

• Formative Check (How will you check that all students are involved and engaged in the lesson?

I will simply ask them how they are doing and if they need any help. This way I am
mentally checking off who is on task, who needs a little help and who is almost done.

• Closure (How will you end the lesson purposefully, with intentionality?)

I will ask them a few questions about PEMDAS and how the strategy was able
to help them in the 1492 worksheet.

• Assessment (How will you assess that students achieved the lesson goals or learning targets?)

Just by making sure they made progress and was able to understand the topic
a little easier.

Lesson Plan Materials (Include everything needed to successfully complete the lesson with
the full class. Remember to include all supplies, as well as technology, whiteboard space,
classroom space, etc.)

Classroom Space, Pencils, Paper, Erasers, worksheets, White board, dry erase markers,
chairs and pens.
