Question. Using your School Practice experience, what physical developmental,
psychological, social, and health challenges may cause students to seek for guidance
and counselling
In today's educational landscape, students face a myriad of challenges that can impact their
overall well-being and academic success. These challenges encompass physical, psychological,
social, and health aspects of their lives. As a result, many students find themselves seeking
guidance and counselling to navigate these difficulties effectively. In this discussion, I will
explore the various physical developmental, psychological, social, and health challenges that
students may encounter, in reflection on my school practice experience hich can lead them to
seek support from school counsellors and professionals. By understanding these challenges, we
can better comprehend the importance of providing comprehensive guidance and counselling
services to support students in their personal growth and academic journey.

Physical Developmental Challenges: Students may face physical health challenges that
impact their overall well-being and academic performance. Chronic illnesses, disabilities,
or physical limitations can pose barriers to their participation in school activities and may
require specialized support. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, students
with chronic health conditions are at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulties
and psychosocial challenges (AAP, 2019). Guidance and counseling can help students
cope with these challenges and develop strategies to manage their physical health needs
effectively.

Psychological Challenges: Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, or trauma
can significantly impact students’ academic success and emotional well-being. According to
the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), approximately one in five youth aged 13-18
experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life (NAMI, 2021). Students
may seek guidance and counseling to address these challenges, learn coping mechanisms,
and access appropriate mental health resources.

Social Challenges: Students may encounter social challenges that affect their self-esteem,
relationships, and overall well-being. Bullying, peer pressure, or social isolation can have
detrimental effects on students’ mental health and academic performance. Research has
shown that students who experience bullying are more likely to report symptoms of
depression and anxiety (Klomek et al., 2019). Guidance and counseling can provide students
with support, strategies to navigate social situations, and promote positive peer relationships.

Health Challenges: Health-related challenges such as substance abuse, eating disorders, or

body image issues can significantly impact students’ physical and mental well-being. These
challenges can interfere with their academic progress and overall quality of life. According to
the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), substance abuse among students can lead to
academic decline, increased risk of mental health disorders, and impaired social functioning
(NIDA, 2021). Guidance and counseling can help students address these health concerns,
provide education on healthy behaviors, and connect them with appropriate resources.

It is important to note that the cited sources provide general information and statistics on the
mentioned challenges. Each student’s experience is unique, and the specific reasons for seeking
guidance and counseling may vary. School counselors play a vital role in assessing individual
student needs, providing personalized support, and collaborating with other professionals to
address these challenges effectively.
