more about her
Queen Elizabeth became queen at a time of political crisis.
She was known as the ‘Virgin Queen’ because she sacrificed her
own happiness for the good of her nation to which she was
‘married to’.
She was against having a husband to make sure that England was
safe from foreign rule. She had no children during her lifetime.
Elizabeth I wanted to build a strong, peaceful nation with a
strong government, free from foreign rulers.
Her greatest threats were the Catholic protestants in England.
The arts flourished during her reign.
Elizabeth’s religious
settlement
When Queen Elizabeth I became queen, one of her main
goals was to stop the persecutions of the Anglicans, who
at that time, were seen as protestants

Elizabeth knew that the Pope viewed her as illegitimate or

against the law,and that he would never see her as the
Queen of England. Due to some form of resentment,
Elizabeth did not believe the Pope was the head of the
English Church and so then said she herself and other
queens and kings who would suceed her were to be the
heads of the English Church.
The Anglican Church still remained quite similar to the
Catholic teachings.
Services were arranged in a structure that was suitable
and comfortable for both those who wanted to continue
with the Catholic way of doing things and those who were
in support of the Anglican Church.

Elizabeth’s religious
settlement
When Queen Elizabeth saw that the Catholic bishops
appointed under Queen Mary disagreed with her ideas, she
appointed new men who did as she pleased.

Only a few extreme protestants and loyal Catholics were

unhappy about the change brought by Elizabeth, however,
England as a whole had settled down under the Anglican
Church.
