2 EXAM TASK Read the following text. For each quesEon (1-5) choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits
best according to the text.

When at the Summer Olympic Games held in Stockholm in 1912 the American Walter Winans won a gold medal,
it was not for anything parBcularly athleBc. The award was for a small bronze statue called An American TroJer, which
he had made earlier that year. Winans had also won a gold medal for shooBng at the 1908 Olympics and a silver one
four years later in the same sports discipline. Amazingly, he was only the second person in history to win medals for
both his sporBng and arBsBc achievements.
The idea that Olympic Games should be combined with compeBBons in the arts goes back to Pierre de CouberBn, who
wanted to recreate the Olympic Games in a similar form to those organised in ancient Greece. CouberBn, who had
received a classical educaBon, thought that a true Olympian should try to be perfect in both mind and body. That’s why
he supported including compeBBons in the arts in the Olympic Games. However, the first modern Olympics of 1908 did
not feature any art compeBBons because CouberBn was afraid that the Olympic movement was sBll too weak to
introduce such important changes.
But four years later, in 1912, he managed to persuade the Swedish organisers, though with some difficulty, to include art
compeBBons in the Stockholm Olympics. The arBsts competed in five categories: architecture, music, painBng, literature
and sculpture. CriBcs of the idea complained that only 33 arBsts had sent their works to the Olympic Games. However,
the number was sBll enough to choose winners in each category and award them gold medals. InteresBngly, the gold
medal in literature was awarded to George Hohrod. The name was a pseudonym used by Pierre de CouberBn himself.
For the next three and a half decades, art compeBBons were part of the Olympic Games. However, a\er World War 2
some of the organisers were against the idea of art compeBBons. They argued that all the arBsts taking part in the
Olympic Games were professionals, but the Olympic Games were an event for amateur athletes. The American Avery
Brundage argued that the art compeBBons were quickly changing into money-making exhibiBons for the arBsts taking
part in them. As a result of his campaign, before the 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki, it was decided that art
compeBBons would be replaced with non-profit exhibiBons. The organisers of the Olympic Games today are sBll required
to prepare a programme of arBsBc, non-compeBBve acBviBes to integrate the contestants and spectators.
