Part 1: Texas Annexation and Independence


Answer the following questions in 2-3 complete sentences.
1. Describe Texas before it became its own independent country. Who lived there? What
countries ruled over it beforehand? How did Americans come to settle there too?

Texas was horrible and under dictatorship before it became its own independent country.
Tejanos and Coahuila lived there. Americans settled there when Moses and Stephen
Austin sold land in Texas and established 1st American settlement

2. How did Texas gain its independence? (Hint: Be sure to mention Sam Houston, the
Alamo, San Jacinto, and Santa Anna!)

After the war of texas independece between the dictated president and the tejanos. Took
place in San Jacinto river where Santa anna and Sam houston fought. Before this every
american and tejano was killed at the Alamo including Jim Bowie and important other
Americans.

3. Describe the annexation of Texas.

Henry clay wanted to annex texas to the union but without going to war w Mexico which
was impossible so he changed his mind and decided not the annex texas. James Knox
Polk on the other hand supported annexation even if it meant war with Mexico which was
what happened since he was the one who got elected

President Polk provoked a confrontation with Mexico and ordered Zach Taylor to
blockade the Rio Grande which led to a 2-year war with Mexico

5. What was the Mexican Cession? What territories changed hands after the war ended?

It was when Mexico gave up a lot of land to the US to end the war including the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo. Parts of Utah, Nevada, and colorado changed hands along with
texas.
