A Bit of Energy Review for You 2019

1. Energy :

a) Is the ability to heat an object

b) Has the same units as work
c) Is velocity times force
d) Is the ability to make something move
e) Both b and d

2. From the top of a 70 m high building, a 1 kg ball is thrown directly downward with
an initial speed of 10 m/s. If the ball reaches the ground with a speed of 30 m/s, find
the energy lost to air friction, heat etc.

a) 0 J b) 100 J c) 300 J d) 400 J e) 700 J

3. A wagon is dragged over a horizontal surface by a constant force

of 16N acting at an angle of 37° above the horizontal. Determine the
work done by the force if the wagon moves 20 meters.

a) -255.6J b) +255.6 J c) 25.6J d) -320J e) + 320 J

4. Savannah’s Telsa (2000 kg car) is traveling at 30 m/s. Savannah slams on the

brakes and skids for 20 m and the speed of the car is reduced to 12 m/s. Calculate
the:
a. work done by the brakes.
b. force of friction provided by the brakes.

5. A 74 kg student, starting from rest, slides down an 11.8 meter high water slide.
On the way down, 5600 J of energy is lost due to friction. How fast is he going at
the bottom of the slide?

6. A monkey pushes a cat in a wagon on a horizontal surface. If the cat and wagon
start from rest, end up with a speed of 3.2 m/s, and have a mass of 13kg,
determine the amount of work the monkey did to while speeding up the cat and
wagon.

9. A 64kg man runs to the top of some stairs some stairs that are 4.2m vertical from
the floor. If he starts at the bottom from rest, loses 456J to air resistance and he was
going 4m/s at the top determine the total work done by the man. [answer: 3602 joules]

4.2 m

10. If the bullet hits a block of wood shown below and they move off with a combined
mass of 4.65kg at a speed of 6.5m/s, determine the maximum height (h) the block will
swing if it loses 67J of energy due to air friction. [answer: 69cm]
