TOPIC: Basket Ball

HISTORY OF BASKET BALL

The basket ball game originated from America.


It was introduced in 1891 by Dr. James
Naismith, who was then the physical education
director at the Y.M.C.A. College in springfield,
Massachusetts. It was designed as a game to
create interest in the gymnasium during the
winter. In 1936 basket ball became an Olympic
event which was held in Berlin.

Basket ball was introduced into Nigeria by


American soldiers after the second world war in
the early 1950s. competitive basket started in
1964 and the controlling body, Nigeria
basketball association (Federation) was formed
in 1965.

The controlling body in the world is the


Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA),
which in English means international
Basketball Federation. The body was formed in
1932.

THE NATURE OF THE GAME

Basketball can be played indoors or outdoors.


The game is played by two teams of twelve
players (5 players and 7 substitutes). Five
players from each team play on the court at a
time.

The game is started with a jump ball at the


centre circle. The aim of each team is to score
in the opponent’s basket and to prevent the
other team from scoring. Basket ball involves
dribbling, passing and shooting skills.

The game lasts 40 minutes divided into four


quarters of 10 minutes with a 2-minute interval.
The team that scores the greater number of
points wins the game. Players’ numbers start
from 4 and end at 15

FACILITIES
The facilities for basketball include the playing
court, the ring, the backboard and uprights.
The court is a concrete-surface rectangular
space measuring 28m in length and 15m in
width. Other specifications are indicated in the
court dimensions.

TERMINOLOGIES IN BASKETBALL

Time out: This is an interruption of the game


requested by a coach or assistant coach
Dead ball: A ball is dead when not in play due
to a field goal, official interruption or end of a
period. Half or game.

Held ball: A held ball occurs when two or more


opposing players have their hands on the ball
with neither gaining control without undue
roughness.
