ASSIGNMENT # 1; TOPICS: GRADE 11 UNITS 1 – 5
Name: _________________________________________________Class 12.____ Score: _______/40 marks

Instructions:
1. Keep your work neat and tidy.
2. Be sure to answer all questions before the due date (16/02/2024)
3. Do not copy from friends! Try it out yourself. Quote: “Give man a fish, and you feed him for a
day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.)
4. Only short answer questions, please take time to read carefully and understand it before
attempting it. Show your complete working outs to obtain full marks. NO WORKING OUTS,
NO POINTS.

1. The main scale reading while measuring the thickness of a rubber ball using Vernier caliper is 8
cm and the Vernier scale coincidence is 2. Find the radius of the ball if least count is 0.1mm. (1
mark)

2. Define least count. (1 mark)

4. In a 100 m relay competition, the time taken for the individual runners to complete a distance
is found to be 2.63s, 2.56 s, 2.42s, 2.71s and 2.80s.
Calculate
(i) the mean value of the time.

(ii) (ii) the absolute error in each measurement.

(iii) the mean absolute error

(iv) the relative error.

(v) the percentage errors.

5. A bullet leaves a rifle with a velocity of 452m/s. While accelerating through the barrel of the
rifle, the bullet moves 0.93m. Determine the acceleration of the bullet. (1 mark)

6. The graph below describes the motion of a fly that starts out going left.

a) Identify sections(s) where the fly moves with constant velocity. (1 mark)
____________________________________________________________________________________
b) Identify section(s) where the fly moves right slowing down. (1 mark)

c) Identify section(s) where the fly moves left speeding up. (1 mark)
____________________________________________________________________________________
d) When is the fly at rest? (1 mark)
____________________________________________________________________________________
e) Determine the total distance travelled by the fly. (2mark)

f) Determine the total displacement of the fly’s journey. (2 marks)

7. Two masses are hanging by a massless string from a
frictionless pulley as shown on the right. If 𝑚1 is
greater than 𝑚2 , determine the acceleration of the
two masses when released from rest. (2 marks)

8. In the diagram below, the mass of 𝑚1 is 8-kg and

the mass of 𝑚2 is 2-kg. The coefficient of kinetic
friction between the block and the incline is 0.2 and
the plane rises 25° from the horizontal. Find the
acceleration of the system and the force of tension
in the string. (3 marks)

9. A traffic light is suspended by two cables as shown

in the diagram. If cable 1 has a tension of 49 N and
𝜃1 = 30° and cable 2 has a tension force of 85 N and
𝜃2 = 60° , find the mass of the traffic light. (3 marks)

10. Peter lift (up straight) a 4kg box to a height of 2 meters above the ground. The box moved at a
constant velocity for the entire displacement. How much work did the gravitational force do on
the box? (2 marks)

11. A 4kg trash can is pulled across a flat surface via a rope, with a 50N applied force (to the right).
A frictional force of 30N act between the surface and the trash can. The car is pulled for a total
horizontal displace of 10 meters.
A) Draw a free body diagram which depicts all the forces which acts upon the trash can. (2
marks)

B) How much work was done by the applied force on the trash can? 2 marks

C) How much work is done by the frictional force on the trash can? (2 marks)
