Insulin Pen Administration Steps (1 point each)

Wash and dry hands
Remove pen cap
Wipe rubber stopper with an alcohol swab
Remove protective tab of a single-use needle and screw the needle onto the pen
Remove the outer and inner needle shields
Prime the pen by turning the dose dial to 2 units, holding the pen upright and pushing the
button until a drop of insulin appears
Turn the dial to the number of units to be injected
Clean injection site with alcohol swab
Pinch clean skin at injection site
Push the pen needle into the skin
Release pinched skin
Press the pen button all the way in
Keep button pressed while counting for 6 seconds
Withdraw the needle from the skin while keeping the button fully pressed
Dispose needle into a sharps container or another container that is not easily punctured
(e.g. laundry detergent container)
