A day in the life of a business owner
If you’ve seen Shark Tank, you’ll know that there is no shortage of budding
entrepreneurs and big ideas in the world. Running your own business is full of
challenges and triumphs, and many would-be entrepreneurs are attracted to the idea of
work that allows for personal freedom.Your daily goal is to bring about progress in the
business in the best way possible, and that can mean different things for different
people. You might find yourself working on new product developments, making sales
calls, and having meetings with your team or your clients, but every day has the potential
to be a little bit different, and very rewarding.

What is small business?

Running a small business is a diverse career path with plenty of room for diversification.
Legally, businesses which employ fewer than 20 people fall within the definition of a
small business, making this the ideal field for those who like the idea of developing close
working relationships with others. Small business owners often wear many hats as
financial analysts, planners, marketers, and managers, doing whatever is necessary to
keep the business healthy and growing.

1
Is running a business right for me?
Running a business is a unique experience best suited to a specific personality type, and
a handful of attributes and skills will be critical to your success. If you can check off each
of these boxes, there’s a good chance that you will love being your own boss!

Customer service skills

Customers are the heart of your business, so it goes without saying that people who like
people are most likely to succeed in this field. Even if you have no prior customer-facing
experience, a positive attitude will set you up for success while you learn the ropes.

Self-discipline
The idea of being your own boss might be appealing, but as they say, great freedom
comes with great responsibility. If you’re the type of person who loves living life on their
own terms and always manages to check things off their to-do list, then owning your
own business could be a great adventure.

Communication
No matter the size of your business, you’ll need great communication skills to keep
things running smoothly. You’ll need to be confident making arrangements with a range
of people including staff, customers, suppliers, and government organisations.

Creativity
The ability to think creatively is often the secret ingredient that turns a good business
owner into a great entrepreneur - after all, most businesses are born out of an
innovative idea for process improvement or need fulfilment. You don’t need to don an
art smock or absorb the entire works of Beethoven, but creative thoughts will help to
earn your business a place in customers’ minds.

Financial literacy
In order to run your business effectively, you need to know your numbers. There’s no
need to go and get an accounting degree, but you should understand your financial
position based on income, taxes, wages, and any other costs.

2
Where could I work?
One of the great things about a small
business qualification is that it can
carry you into almost any field you like!
Graduates with a Cert IV in New Small
Business often find themselves as
small business owners, franchisees, or
managers of a department, shop, or
restaurant. A qualification in small
business can give you the knowledge
and skills to skip the application
pool,create your own workplace, and
build your own career in almost any
location, including from the comfort of
your own home!

What could I earn?

Like the scope for job opportunities,
business owners’ earning potential can
vary, but with the right foundations,
there’s almost no limit to what you
could achieve! . Learners who secure
positions in established businesses as
managers of departments, stores, or
venues can look forward to an average
weekly pay of $1,250 or more, while
entrepreneurs who establish
successful businesses earn an average
of $1,450 per week*.
