WHAT IS IT?

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder


characterized by voluntary starvation and
extreme exercising for fear of gaining weight.

It generally develops during adolescence or


young adulthood and tends to affect more
women than men.

SYMPTOMS?
1. Being considerably underweight compared
to people of similar height and age.
2. Very restricted eating pattern.
3. An intense fear of gaining weight.
4. Relentless pursuit of thinness.
5. Heavy influence of percieved body shape on
self esteem.
6. Distorted body image.

WHAT ARE ITS

EFFECTS ON HEALTH?
In severe cases, anorexia can result in heart,
brain or multi-organ failure and death.

heart damage is the most common reason


for hospitalization, and anorexia can be
detrimental to your heart. It can cause
bradycardia, low blood pressure and
deterioration of heart muscles.

HOW TO HELP ANOREXIA?

Treatments often include a combination of the


following:
- Psychotherapy
- Medication
- Nutrition counselling
If you want to help a friend with anorexia or any
eating disorder, make sure that when you talk
to them, you aren't forcing them into the
change. It has to come from them.
