READING IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Graded Paper Works:

1. Enumerate the two types of historical source/document. Give

at least five (5) example of each source.

History (from Greek iotopia, historia, meaning “inquiry;

knowledge acquired by investigation” ) is the study of the
past . Events occurring before the invention of writing
system are considered prehistory. History is an umbrella
term that relates to past events as well as the memory,
discover, collection, organization, presentation and
interpretation of information about events.
There are two kinds of historical sources, the primary
and secondary sources. Primary sources is defined as “a
piece of evidence written or created during the period under
investigation, it was produced during the period under
study. One of the example of primary sources are original
documents such as diaries, speeches, manuscript, letters,
interviews, records, eyewitness accounts, autobiographies.
Also work such empirical scholarly work such as article,
clinical report, case studies, dissertations. Creative works
such as poetry, music video, photography. There are also
primary sources that are not written, example of it are
colonial church and old furniture. Secondary sources are
“works produced after the event has taken place”. These type
of source are evaluation of commentaries of events, people
or institution of the past. Those who produced secondary
sources used primary sources, the author did not participate
in the event. Examples of secondary sources are; publication
of textbooks, magazines, articles, book reviews,
commentaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, it is always seen in
our libraries.
Both primary and secondary sources are important and
useful in writing and learning history.
It helps us learn things in the past that we may not seen
with our naked eyes, but it is possible because of these
sources.

2. Do you consider the letter of Andres Bonifacio an eyewitness

account or a firsthand account of the Philippine Revolution?
Explain your answer.

I consider Andres Bonifacios work as a firsthand account of

the Philippine Revolution, because it comes from the first
or original source, anything you see or hear yourself is
also a firsthand. The Philippine revolution gets the
information from Andres Boniofacio’s letter, was the
eyewitness of the said event and he was the one who wrote
the letter.
