Exponent Laws

Terminology
o Base = big number
x2
o Exponent = little number

What does this mean

35

 We have five exponent laws:

o Multiplication o Negative
o Division o Zero
o Power of a Power

 Note: Exponent laws only apply when the base is the same

The Exponent Laws

a) Multiplication – when the base is the same, add the exponents
42 x 45

b) Division – subtract exponents

67
67  63 (or written as: 63 )

c) Power of a Power – multiply exponents

(52)4

 Zero – equals 1
