Thời gian làm bài: 50 phút

A. PHẦN TRẮC NGHIỆM

Read the passage below carefully and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D).
HURRICANE WHO?
Tropical cyclones are called typhoons in Asia and hurricanes in North and South America. These storms go
around like a wheel turning to the left when they hit in the northern part of the world. They have wind speeds of
60 kph or more. In the United States, the Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, Florida keeps an eye out for
hurricanes.
When meteorologists detect a hurricane, they give it a name. They can use either a male or female name.
Why should tropical cyclones have names? The name makes it easier for people to keep up with information
about a hurricane and its possible dangers.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an international weather group, decides what names will
be used. The WMO makes lists of names using the English alphabet. Each name on the list starts with a different
letter. The first hurricane of the year gets the first name on that year’s list. The second hurricane gets the next
name. For example, if the first hurricane is named Abel, the second might be name Betty. The name lists do not
include names beginning with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. There aren’t many names that begin with these letters.
Asian countries use a different list, which is made up by the WMO’s Typhoon Committee. This list has a few
personal names, but most of the names are of flowers, animals, trees, and other similar things.

Besides financial and technological power, the robot wave is favored by the Japanese as well. It is interesting to
have a robot walk around the home and do the housework, and it will never complain about working overtime
or need pensions when it retires. We are waiting for a robotics revolution. That revolution has been going on
quietly for a long time.
Japan is already an industrial robot powerhouse. Over 370,000 robots worked at factories across Japan in 2005,
about 40% of the global total. There are 32 robots for every 1,000 Japanese manufacturing employees, according
to a recent report by Macquarie.
The cost of machinery is going down, while labor costs are rising. Soon, robots can even replace human labors
to work as low-cost workers at small firms with greatly boosting productivity. It is estimated that 1 million
industrial robots will have installed throughout the country by 2025. A single robot can replace about 10
employees, which means Japan’s future million-robot army of workers can take the place of 10 million humans.
That is about 15% of the current workforce.
Robotic technology is also applied at hospitals. At a hospital in Aizu Wakamatsu, a child-sized white and blue
robot wheels across the floor, guiding patients to each area of the hospital. It helpfully prints out maps of the
hospital, and even checks the state of patient’s arteries.

16 “The robot wave is favored by Japanese” means ________.

A. The robot industry in Japan not so developed as that in order countries
B. The Robots Japanese support robots and think that they are good things
C. Robots are expensive and the Japanese have financial problem to buy a robot
D. The Japanese do not really like robots
17 If we have a robot as a servant at home, it ________.
A. will certainly ask for pensions B. might be very dangerous
C. always complains about everything D. will be willing to work overtime
18 How many employees can a single robot replace?
A. about 10 B. under 40 C. over 32 D. approximately 15
19 According to the third paragraph, ________.
A. robot workers are more expensive than human labors
B. robots cannot replace human labors
C. robots work with lower productivity
D. robot workers are cheaper than human labors
20 We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.

There are some explanations for the failure of television to attract the interest of teachers. Firstly, the
schools that purchased television sets have not set aside money for equipment repairs and maintenance so
these television sets are sooner or later out of working order. Secondly, these schools have not found an
effective way to train teachers to integrate television into their ongoing instructional programs. Lastly, most
teachers do not regard the quality of television and its usefulness in the classroom very highly.
School teachers work hard for at least twelve years to train their students to become good readers.

word or phrase that best fits each pf the numbered blanks.
Arriving in the Black Sea port of Batumi was a dream come true for me. (1) __________ years I had longed
to wander slowly along the promenade gazing out over this landlocked sea, so as I headed to the coast, with
butterflies in my stomach, I felt both excited and (2) __________ nervous. Would the Black Sea actually be
black? Well, I’ll let the cat out of the bag - it isn’t ! And according to my guidebook, the Black Sea is more like
a lake than a sea. It has no tides, and, thanks to modern technology, we now know that below a certain
depth it is too poisonous to sustain life. But its calm surface gives a false impression; on stormy days, the
churning waters can have a devastating effect on shipping.
My travelling companion and I had bought cheap tickets on the overnight train from Tbilisi, the capital of
Georgia. This had proved to be a false economy as we hardly got any sleep, and by the time we arrived in
Batumi, we were so tired and hungry that we virtually staggered off the train. We had a few (3) __________

Try to imagine what life would be like if there were no electric lights, no television, or no cars. What if
you had no running water to take a shower and no refrigerator to keep your food cold? Life would be tough
without these great inventions.
Since ancient times, people have been inventing new machines, materials, and ways of doing things.
The people who come up with new things are called inventors. Sometimes an inventor makes an invention
to solve a problem. Sometimes an inventor discovers something new by accident.
Everyone probably has his or her favorite inventions. One great invention was the printing press. A German
named Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400s invented a press that made it easy to print books. Books became
much more common after the invention of the printing press. The books helped other inventors make new
things.
The invention of the steam engine around 1700 led to the Industrial Revolution. Inventors made many
new machines that were powered by steam engines. They invented locomotives, steamboats, and all kinds
of factory machines.
Another great invention, the internal combustion engine, led to the invention of automobiles in the late
1800s. Inventors made better and better internal combustion engines. These are the engines we use today

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
Music influences people in different ways or the same person differ-ently at different times. Music may
seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to the music. We are able
to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive
effect will probably not make him feel good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier,
yet it is not the music itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry
person does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes
that anger come to the surface.
When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being
affected. The musi-cians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece under-stood the effects
of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, intro-duced a whole science that concerned them. Because
the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive,
uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a better
understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is actually having.
