1.0 PURPOSE

This method statement covers the requirements for material and application of coating
activities to PYGAS TF1-T-1301 storage tank Roof, Structure, handrails and external
shall at SABTANK-Yanbu.

1.1 PRIORITY
1.1.1 Any conflict exists between the requirements of the listed standards, specifications
and this method statement should immediately be brought to the attention of
SABTANK, and an acceptable solution must be reached.

1.1.2 Wherever a difference exists between the method statement & specification, the
specification shall govern. However, no deviations shall be made from the
specification without written authorization from SABTANK.

1.1.3 All the applicable procedures of this method statement required to be understood by
the operatives must be explained by their respective supervisor / foreman and record
of explanation and operative’s understanding shall be maintained on Toolbox talk
form.

3.0 SCOPE
3.1 MATERIALS
3.1.1 Alyami shall deliver all painting equipment / accessories to site used for this project and
shall ensure that all equipment / accessories are suitable for the purpose to be used.

3.1.2 All painting materials to be used in this project shall be in accordance with the project
specification SES T01-S01.

Materials Details- Paint System SES-PCS-3: -


 Primer : Inorganic Zinc Silicate (65 microns)
 Intermediate: Epoxy High Build Polyamide with MIO (2x125 microns)
 Topcoat: Acrylic Polyurethane - Gloss (50 microns)

3.1.3 The materials for primer coat and finish (final) coat shall be from one manufacturer only.
Mixing components or coats from different systems of the same manufacturer or other
manufacturer shall be avoided.

3.2 SPECIALISED TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT


3.2.1 MECHANICAL AND HAND TOOLS
 Air Compressors 400/750/850 cfm inclusive of drip trays
 After Coolers 850 cfm along with 3m long bull hoses of 2” diameter.
 Air Receivers (200 L capacity) along with 5m long air hoses of 1.25” diameter.
 Grit Blasting units with complete accessories like blast pot, water separator,
Deadman valve, micro-grit valve, Blasting Helmet, etc.
 Water Washing Machine
 Airless Spray Pump including hoses, spray guns and tips.
 Hand Tools as required.

3.2.2 ELECTRICAL
 Junction Boxes and Electrical Lead.

3.2.3 TESTING / MEASURING INSTRUMENTS


 Wet Film Thickness (WFT) Gauge.
 Dry Film Thickness (DFT) Gauge.
 Calibration Standards for DFT gauge.
 Surface Profile Gauge.
 Testex Replica tape (Press-O-Film, X-coarse type).
 Surface temperature gauge.
 Digital hygrometer.
 Salt/Chloride Test Kit.

3.3 STORAGE AND HANDLING


3.3.1 All the paint materials shall be stored in a 23ºC as per Product data sheet of
manufacturers’ storage recommendations for protection against temperature
extremes.

3.3.2 The temperature reading of the storage area shall be recorded twice and logged on daily
basis.

3.3.3 All painting materials shall be handled in accordance with the manufacturer's written
recommendations and shall be brought to the point of application in original sealed
cans, supplied and delivered in labeled containers.

The labels shall be legible at the time of application and if possible, shall include:
 Brand Name/Name of Manufacturer
 Formula or Specification Number
 Color
 Manufacturer's Application Instruction
 Validity date

3.3.4 All other accessories of painting equipments shall be stored in a way that it is protected
from exposure to weather e.g. heat, rain, dirt, etc.

3.3.5 Only the materials that shall be used in each workday shall be stored in the immediate
work area. All materials shall be stored at locations designated and allotted by
SABTANK.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY

4.1 SITE INCHARGE


Site In charge is responsible to provide his site teams with appropriate resources to
ensure that works are done in accordance with the project quality requirements.

4.2 SPRAYER / BLASTER / BRUSH PAINTERS /SURFACE PREPARATION PERSONNELS:


Sprayer / Blaster / Brush Painters / Surface Preparation Personnels shall be responsible for
application of blasting / surface preparation / coating work at the work area in compliance to
the field safety & quality requirements as directed to them by their site in charge.

4.3 PAINTING INSPECTOR


Conduct Inspection at sites with owner specification & approved application procedures.

4.4 LABORS
All labors shall carry out their assigned task in accordance with the site in charge
instructions.

5.0 SURFACE PREPARATION


5.1 GENERAL
5.1.1 Prior to the start of any painting task, a release document shall be issued by
TIS/SABTANK to Alyami. Alyami representative together with the TIS/SABTANK
nominated representative will then check the area or surfaces where painting is to be
applied and appropriate inspection document shall be signed.

5.1.2 Prior to start of abrasive blasting, Alyami shall ensure that any visible surface
discontinuities such as welding spatters, slag, flux deposits, dents, laminations,
undercuts, porosities, etc. are removed by SABTANK.

5.1.3 All the labels, stickers if any shall be removed fully.

5.1.4 Blow the entire area with clean, dry compressed air to remove all dust.

5.1.5 Clean, dry, oil free air shall be used to remove dust from the surfaces after
preparation. It may be necessary to clean by brushing.

5.2 ABRASIVE BLAST CLEANING


5.2.1 Clean and dry abrasive and moisture-free compressed air shall be used for abrasive
blast cleaning.

5.2.2 Coated Surfaces shall be prepared by full blasting using recycled abrasive to remove
old, contaminated paint and its particles from surface, prior to coating surface shall be
sweep blasting using new abrasive to achieve as per Sa2.5 equivalent to SSPC-SP10.

5.2.3 Abrasive blast cleaning and painting shall not be carried out together in the same area
nor shall abrasive cleaning be carried out in proximity of recently applied paint.

5.2.4 Minimum pressure required for Blasting shall be 90psi.

5.2.5 Chloride levels to be with in 50mg/m2 as per SES T01-S01

5.2.6 Particular attention shall be paid to joints, angles, pits and weld areas to ensure that
their surfaces are brought to the required standard. After blasting, all dust and grits
shall be removed from pockets and corners using clean and dry compressed air.
Between cleaning and priming, the substrate shall not allow to be contaminated. All
surfaces shall be prime coated before discoloration occurs and all cases within four
hours of blast cleaning.

5.2.7 Surfaces not prime coated within prescribed time after blast cleaning for any reason
shall be cleaned again with care before primer is applied.

6.0 PAINT APPLICATION


6.1 GENERAL

6.1.1 Coatings shall be applied in accordance with the specification SES T01-S01 and the
manufacturer’s instructions.

6.1.1 Records of on-going quality control inspection of application stages shall be


maintained by designated representative.

6.1.2 All Painting activities to be carried out within 04 hours after completion of Blasting.

6.1.3 Stripe coat to be done for Weld Joints, Edges, Corners etc.

6.1.4 WFT to be measured during application to ensure specified thickness.

6.1.5 Spray Tip range should be range as per manufacturer data sheet

6.1.6 Weather condition shall be monitored and recorded.

6.1.7 The Alyami painting inspector shall verify that the coating has been applied to provide
a uniform film of the specified thickness is well bonded to the metal or previously
applied coating is free of laps, streaks, sags, or other visually evident defects and
was applied within the manufacturer’s specified pot life.

6.1.8 The information related to ambient conditions surface cleanliness, mixing, application,
and cure shall be recorded with minimum and maximum allowable tolerances as per
manufacturer’s product data sheet in line with inspection frequency requirements.

6.1.9 The method of application shall be as specified in the painting system schedules and
data sheets.

6.1.10 Prior to starting of paint works, ensure all the areas to be painted are pre-cleaned and
surface is properly prepared.

6.1.11 Only qualified personnel, thoroughly familiar and experienced with painting application,
shall be employed for this work.

6.1.12 The thinners provided by the manufacturer to thin the paint shall be mixed in
proportions recommended by the paint manufacturer.

6.1.13 Apply coating to clean and dry surfaces. The temperature of the air, paint, or metal
shall be as per the manufacturer’s technical data sheet.

6.1.14 Paint shall be applied so that an even film of uniform thickness, tint and consistency
covers the entire surface, and is free of pin holes, blisters, dry spray, detrimental runs
and sags, excessive or inadequate film build, foreign inclusions etc.

6.1.15 The application of coating shall be avoided in case the air is misty and when the
surfaces are damp or frosted.

6.1.16 Painters shall be issued with proper wet film thickness gauges and shall use it for
frequent checks on applied wet film.

6.1.17 Dry film thickness - DFT shall be tested by gauges which are periodically calibrated for
accurate measurement.

differently from the others so that MISSED areas will be visually apparent.

6.1.19 Preparation of surfaces between coats - Immediately before each coating after the first
(except those prescribed by the manufacturer as wet-on-wet), the surface shall be
examined to determine its need for cleaning and preparation to accept subsequent
coats. If grease or oil is present, it shall be removed by a suitable of non - ionic
detergent and then pressure - hosed. The same treatment shall be given to areas
from which grease or oil has been removed.

6.1.20 Timing of coatings - Except for coatings designated by the manufacturers as wet on
wet, coatings shall be applied only under the following conditions: -
 The surface has been cleaned and dried.
 The manufacturer's specified minimum time for recoat has elapsed.
 The manufacturer's specified maximum time for recoat has not elapsed.

6.2 METHOD OF APPLICATION – CONVENTIONAL SPRAY / AIRLESS SPRAY


6.2.1 Method of application shall be selected based manufacturer recommendations in the
technical data sheet.

6.2.2 The operator of spray equipment shall be experienced in its use and shall be
responsible for maintaining it in good working order.

6.2.3 Material hoses and container shall be thoroughly cleaned before different materials
are introduced.

6.2.4 At regular intervals of application, the applicator is to conduct wet film checks to
ensure that the desired coating thickness is being achieved.

6.2.5 When excessive coating has been applied, excess materials shall be brushed out
immediately.

6.2.6 If conventional spray is used –


 Provide suitable traps or separators to exclude oil and water from the air.
 The pressure on the material in the pot and of air at the spray gun shall be adjusted
for optimum spraying effectiveness.
 The pressure on the material in the pot shall be adjusted when necessary for
changes in elevation of the gun above pot.

6.2.7 If AIRLESS spray is used –


 The atomizing air pressure of the gun shall be as per the data sheet.
 Tip sizes shall be as per manufacturer data sheet.
 Safety spacer shall be present at the exit end.

6.2.8 During application of inorganic zinc, equip paint containers with a mechanical agitator
so that the mixture is in motion at regular intervals during the application period.

6.3 METHOD OF APPLICATION - BRUSHING


6.3.1 Where applied by brush the paint shall evenly over the entire area with the minimum
practical amount of brushing. The method of application and the type of brush used
shall be suitable for the paint specified and surface being painted. Brushes shall be
maintained in good order and condition.
6.3.2 Conditions of application - No application shall be made if one or more of the following
conditions is likely to exist at the time of application or during curing period: -
 Rain or wind-borne dust, including dust from blast cleaning operations.
 Relative humidity is above or below the thresholds established in the
manufacturers written product data sheets or the surface temperature of the
steel surface is less than 3 °C above the dew point.
 Ambient temperature of the metal surface is outside the range of 10 °C - 50 °C.

6.4 APPLICATION OF PRIMER


6.4.1 The prepared surface shall be inspected for contamination by the Alyami Painting
Inspector prior to coating.

6.4.2 Primer shall only be applied to the surface which has been prepared and cleaned in
accordance with the specification.

6.4.3 Paint shall be applied by conventional spray or airless spray as per the specification
and manufacturer’s data sheets.

6.4.4 Paint shall not be applied during rain, fog, mist or in a dust laden atmosphere unless
suitably and effectively protected.

6.4.5 Wet film thickness gauges shall be used where practicable to ensure that specified
film thickness is being achieved.

6.5 APPLICATION OF TOP-COAT


6.5.1 Before the application of the next coating, the previous coating shall be thoroughly
dry and clean from all harmful matter, such as grease, oil, dust etc.

6.5.2 The prepared surface shall be inspected by the Alyami Painting Inspector.

6.5.3 Paint shall be applied by airless spray as per the specification and manufacturer’s
data sheets.

6.5.4 Paint shall not be applied during rain, fog, mist or in a dust laden atmosphere unless
suitable and effectively protected.

6.5.5 Wet film thickness gauges shall be used where practicable to ensure that specified
film thickness is being achieved.

6.5.6 Each coat of paint shall be generally free from surface defects, particularly pinholes,
runs, sags, blister, dry spray and over spray. The finished coat shall have an even
and uniform appearance with due allowance being made for the change in the film at
the edge of stripe coating.

6.5.7 However, if localized repair work has been carried out, appearance will lack
uniformity.

6.6 CURING

6.6.1 Tanks shall not be placed in service unless the final coating is fully cured, the curing
time for the paint shall be as recommended in the Manufacturer data sheet.

7.0 QUALITY CONTROL


7.1 GENERAL
7.1.1 Alyami shall ensure that the Tanks released for the painting is free from dust, rust, oil,
mill scale, grease, weld slag and abrasive blasted etc prior to the start of painting work.

7.1.2 All inspection shall be carried out in accordance with SES T01-S01, manufacturer’s
printed recommendations and this method statement.

7.1.3 Alyami representative shall be present during all phases of inspection of major lining
painting.

7.1.4 Inspection to be done by certified painting inspector.

7.2 INSPECTION AND ACCEPTANCE


7.2.1 Paint materials and application shall be inspected to ensure they conform to the
requirements of the manufacturer’s recommendations and client specification.

7.2.2 Acceptance Testing of Painting Materials

7.2.2.1 A pre-shipment test certificate of supplied material may be provided in place of


acceptance test.

7.2.3 Testing while application of Painting


7.2.3.1 The following inspection and testing shall be performed during the application of
coating system:

 Checking on raw materials (integrity of packing, expiry dates etc)


 Checking of surface, ambient and paint storage temperature requirements as
per the manufacturer’s recommended product data sheet

 Visual examination of surface preparation


 Wet film thickness checking with the use of magnetic elcometer thickness gauge.

7.2.4 Testing after application of Painting


 Dry film thickness checking with the use of Digital coating thickness gauge

8.0 HEALTH & SAFETY


8.1 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS
8.1.1 Preventive measure and precautions shall be implemented to reduce personal
exposure to hazardous chemicals.

8.1.2 All materials used on site shall be provided for with the material safety data sheets,
which will indicate the manufacturer’s recommendation for the safe use of materials.

8.1.3 All painting material must be labeled to identify appropriate PPE requirement.

8.2 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:


8.2.1 All personnel working with painting material shall wear the following personal
protective equipment as a minimum requirement:

8.2.1.1 Safety coverall or long-sleeved clothing / Blast suit for Blasters

8.2.1.2 Safety boots

8.2.1.3 Hardhats or Helmet / Blast hood for Blasters

8.2.1.4 Half face mask with filter cartridge

8.2.1.5 Safety glass with side shields

8.2.1.6 Safety Goggles for overhead works

8.2.1.7 Hand Gloves (leather palmed gloves/cotton gloves with rubber palm)

8.2.1.8 Ear plugs (for noisy areas)

8.2.2 The personnel directly involved in carrying out the spray paint application shall be
provided with filter type mask.

8.2.3 The personnel directly involved in carrying out the blasting operation shall be
provided with Nova 2000 blast helmet duly certified by NIOSH, CE.
