QUESTION ONE
State the objectives of the following tests

( @ 1. Moisture Content test - The objective of this test is to determine the

amount of water present in a soil expressed as a percentage of the
mass of dry soil.
/:-\2. Liquid Limit test ~ !he . Liquid. Limit tes~ pro:ides a .means of
rl j identifying and class1rymg fme grained cohesive soils especially when

C \/ also the plastic limit is known.

/ ... 3. Plastic Limit test - The Plastic Limit test is used together with the
Liquid Limit to determine the Plasticity Index which when plotted

.
against the Liquid Limit on the plasticity chart provides a means of
classifying cohesive soils.
Linear Shrinkage test - The Linear Shrinkage test provides a way of

0 quant~fying the amount of shrinkage likely to be experienced by clay

material .
. Particle Size Distribution analysis - The Particle Size Distribution
analysis test is a necessary classification test for soils, especially
coarse soils, in that it presents the relative portions of different sizes
of particles. From this it is possible to determine whether the soil
consists of predominantly gravel, sand, silt or clay sizes and, to a
limited extent, which of these size ranges is likely to control the
engineering properties of the soil.
QUESTION TWO (20 marks)

a) Mr. Mukubonda while conducting the Particle Size Distribution analysis

test at Road Development Agency while conducting his practicals there
collected the following results:
