Common Assessment Task: Musical Theatre

Analysis

Due date: Wednesday 5 April 2023

You will have 4x 50 minute lessons to analyse, describe, and present (see options below)
your Musical Theatre Analysis.
Either:

a) Complete this task on a Google Doc and then upload to this assessment task.

OR

b) Create an audio or video presentation.

WHAT TO DO:

Choose a Musical from the attached options. You can only choose a Musical from outside
this list if you can access it from your iPad at school either as a movie file or via YouTube
etc. Ask me if you would like to do one outside of this list.

If you already know a musical well, it would be wise to choose that one so you can avoid
needing to watch from start to finish in order to find musical examples.

Answer the following questions:

1. Which Musical have you chosen? Provide the name, composer and year of premiere.
2. Write a short synopsis of the Musical under the sub-headings - EXPOSITION, RISING
ACTION, CLIMAX, FALLING ACTION, RESOLUTION. Don't get caught up in this part!
3. Choose four songs to label as either - CHARACTER SONG, ACTION SONG, BALLAD,
COMEDY SONG, RHYTHMIC SONG, PRODUCTION NUMBER - and explain why you
chose that label in one short paragraph each.
4. Describe two musical motifs in the Musical (use your best vocabulary for this - think
Elements of Music!). Provide time markers and descriptions of the differences
between two occasions where this motif occurs.
