CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

The Philippines' teenage pregnancy rate has increased, in an estimated 538 babies are

born to Filipino teenage mothers every single day, according to Philippine Statistical

Authority. Teenage pregnancy often occurs between the ages of 15-19 years old, often in this

age, the girls are still studying. “Early pregnancy forces girls to take on an adult role while

their bodies are often not ready,” (Muyot, 2019) good. There are cited texts.

With early pregnancy, the girls usually have to abandon their education to give birth

or raise their child. Education becomes a lesser priority and is often delayed until they can

leave the children at home are financially stable. But some girls are studying as well as taking

care of their child and they are whom we call Student Mothers. It has been said that, “Early

pregnancy can trap girls in an escapable cycle of poverty, stigmatized by society for being

teenage mothers or forced into early marriage. It also creates a greater risk in terms of

maternal complications that affect the mother and the child they bear resulting in low survival

rates.” (Muyot, 2019). The burdens for these girls have double as to they have to take care of

school as well as their child at home. Pregnancy at an early age can cause a variety of health

issues that affect the unborn child and the mother, which several factors cause teenage

pregnancy, lack of parental guidance, the influence of other people, the modernity of the

world, and lack of knowledge about teenage pregnancy, and these factors cause a mistake that

can hinder a teenager's success. (delete this one)

Rationale

One of the most pressing issues that the Filipino youth are facing today is teenage

pregnancy. Among the ASEAN member states, the Philippines has one of the highest teenage

pregnancy rates. Recent World Bank data shows that the Philippines has 47 births annually

per 1,000 women aged 15-19, higher than the average adolescent birth rates of 44 globally

and 33.5 in the ASEAN region. Early pregnancy forces the participants to take on an adult

role while their bodies are often not ready for it brings forth increased responsibilities; social

recognition; generate huge emotional, social, and economic costs; and a sense of purpose for

young mothers. These young mothers faced challenges that affected not only their lives but

the lives of their children and family as well. (there is no citation?)

In a study survey conducted by the National Demographic and Health Survey in 2013,

one out of every young Filipino women age 15 to 19 is already a mother or pregnant with a

first child. Furthermore, the proportion of young adult women who have begun childbearing

is higher among those classified as belonging to poor households than those in wealthier

households. A UNFPA-commissioned study in 2016 revealed that those adolescents in the

Philippines who have begun childbearing before the age of 18 are less likely to complete

secondary education compared to the adolescents who have not begun childbearing.(citation)

Moreover, according to the study by Salvador et al. (2016), teenage pregnancies are

often associated with social development issues such as lack of sufficient education and

poverty, that often results to single parenthood which catalyzes conditions that renders the

mothers to become irresponsible. Hence, it conveys a social stigma in various countries and

cultures.

This study would like to focus on exploring the adverse effects of teenage pregnancy

and how it can hinder their success in life. This serves as an ‘eye opener’ to individuals to get
2

involve in the public awareness, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the programs

that would build sustainable development.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand how teen-aged mothers cope with their situation

towards their life affairs and as well as child-rearing. More specifically, what are the

problems they have encountered while nurturing their child in their lives? The study also

seeks to find the coping strategy to perceive the scope of the effect of the major causes of

teenage pregnancy.

(focus on your problem )

With these in mind, the purpose of the study is to help the readers understand the endeavors

experienced by teen-aged mothers. You have not allowed your SOP to be checked by your

teacher)

The research will ask the following questions:

1. As a teenaged mother, how can you manage financially, physically, emotionally, and

mentally in your current situation?

2. What would you do if you ever think of regretting everything in the end?

3. What will you feel like a teen-aged mother if you ever think of aborting your child?

4. How do you plan to support your child’s finances? Redo your sub problems)

5. What are struggles do teenaged mothers face?

3

Significance of the Study (please refer to sample in gc and the format on how this part

should be developed.)

The study will be conducted to find out the extent of how extreme is the effect of the

major causes of teenage pregnancy on the educational development of students and out-of-

school youth of how it will hinder their success in life. The result of this study is beneficial to

students and out-of-school youth, to the parents, teachers, the community, school

administrators, researchers, and other interested individuals because this can serve as

empirical data where the suggestion of minimizing teenage pregnancy in the community can

be taken.

This study targets for the teenagers to know the pieces of information with regards to

their behavior upon avoiding early teenage pregnancy. More likely, this study teaches

teenagers to know more about reducing risky behavior that they have. Giving the guidelines

and communication will help them widen their knowledge and ideas with regards to the

problem. Teenagers nowadays are unconscious of the things they are doing. They tend to be

careless that's why this study will help them indulge the right things that they are supposed to

do. Discovering and knowing the effects of teenage pregnancies will help them know and

gain insights and be aware of being a young parent, which will help them know how to be a

great parent in different aspects.

The study will also benefit students who still are at school because it will give them

information about the cause and possible effects of teenage pregnancy on their studies once

they got pregnant, and avails the out-of-school youth to be aware of not getting pregnant at

teens for the big chance at them to go back to school.

Additionally, this study will benefit the parents to enable them to realize their great

role in educating their teenagers, protecting and diverting them from being impulsive in their

decisions and actions. They must be aware too of what kind of peers their teenagers have.

This study will also benefit the teachers for they could be informed how important is

education to the development of children to manhood. This enables them to guide and

identify the major causes of teenage pregnancy. John Sculley (1983) once said that we

expected teachers to handle teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and the failings of the

family and then we expected them to educate our children. Then and there they would

intensify their functions to counter those causes by diversity.

Moreover, this study will benefit school administrators. It would provide information

on the importance of knowing the major factors behind early pregnancy and the possible

effects on the educational development of teenagers. It’s one way that administrators will

intensify sex education in their school, improve the knowledge of their faculties or teachers

through seminars so that they can deal well with students to avoid pregnancy at an early age.

And truncate if it not halfway to the learners to be effective and to be understood.

The researcher hoped that the result of this study would further be a great help to

future researchers and to all people who are interested to know more about teenage pregnancy

on its causes and the possible effects on their educational development.
