Aim : To apply P.R.I.C.E.

Method and Sports Massage

Materials Required:

1. First aid kit

2. Ice packs or ice wraps
3. Compression bandages or wraps
4. Elevation support (e.g., pillows)
5. Massage oil or lotion
6. Towels
7. Warm-up exercises (optional)

Procedure:

1. Protection:

● Assess the injured area and ensure that further harm is prevented. This may
involve immobilizing the injured limb or using protective gear, such as braces or
splints, to stabilize the injury.
● If necessary, seek professional medical assistance to properly assess and treat
the injury.

2. Rest:

● Encourage rest for the injured individual to prevent further stress or damage to
the affected area.
● Avoid activities that exacerbate pain or discomfort, and allow the injured area to
heal properly.

3. Ice:

● Apply ice to the injured area as soon as possible to reduce pain, inflammation,
and swelling.
● Wrap ice packs in a thin towel to prevent direct contact with the skin and apply
them to the injured area for 15-20 minutes at a time, allowing for intervals of at
least 1-2 hours between icing sessions.
● Continue icing regularly during the first 48 hours following the injury.

4. Compression:
● Use compression bandages or wraps to apply gentle pressure to the injured area,
which helps reduce swelling and provides support.
● Wrap the bandage firmly but not too tightly around the injured limb, ensuring
adequate circulation is maintained.
● Monitor the area for any signs of numbness, tingling, or increased pain, which
may indicate that the bandage is too tight.

5. Elevation:

● Elevate the injured limb above the level of the heart whenever possible to further
reduce swelling and promote fluid drainage.
● Use pillows or cushions to support the injured limb in a comfortable and elevated
position while resting.
● Encourage the individual to elevate the injured area as much as possible,
especially during periods of prolonged rest.

Sports Massage:

● Once initial acute symptoms have subsided and with clearance from a medical
professional, consider incorporating sports massage techniques to aid in the
recovery process.
● Warm up the muscles surrounding the injured area with gentle massage strokes
or warm compresses to promote relaxation and increase blood flow.
● Use a combination of effleurage, petrissage, friction, and kneading techniques to
address muscle tension, adhesions, and scar tissue formation in the affected
area.
● Gradually increase pressure and intensity as tolerated by the individual, ensuring
communication and feedback throughout the massage session.
● Finish the massage session with gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility
and range of motion in the injured area.

Safety Precautions:

1) Always prioritize the safety and well-being of the injured individual, seeking
professional medical advice if necessary.

2) Use caution when applying ice or compression to avoid frostbite or cutting off
circulation to the injured area.
3) Ensure proper hygiene and sanitation practices are followed when performing sports
massage to prevent infection or further complications.

Conclusion:

By following the P.R.I.C.E. method and incorporating sports massage techniques,

individuals can effectively manage sports-related injuries, alleviate pain and discomfort,
and promote the healing process. It is essential to approach injury management with
care, attention to detail, and a focus on the individual's needs and well-being.
