Wecan be heroes
If we can take anything from the teachings of David Bowie, it's
the importance of having a glam-rock alter ego in your
wardrobe, and we've been dusting off our Zigey Stardust
sladzags to celebrate the release of the pop icon’s newest album.
So its hardly a surprise that we're clambering over ourselves to
see David Bowie is, the new retrospective at the V&A in
London, sunning until L1th August 2013. Original
handwritten lyrics, set designs, original costumes... it all sounds
pretty dreamy.
You may spot that this obsession with the Thin White Duke
has wormed its way into our crafting too —turn to page 66 10

tocraft with friends,
ving us time to reflect, be creative
We know that people who reccive erafly gilts ean fel moved that
somone spent time and energy on making them, But imagine adding
activiam to eral, to make the world a more beautiful, fairer place,
Writer Betsy Greer coined the term ‘crafivis’ (activism through,
craft) in 2003 and defined it a “a way of looking at life where voicing
opinions through creativity makes your voice stronger, your
compassion deeper and your quest for justice more infinite”
Graftiviam might be a relatively new word but i's nota new concept
“Theresa long and inspirational history of craft being used to expose
justice: Chilean women, for example, used appliqué to raise
awareness ofthe effects of Pinochet's regime
With the blessing of Betsy Istarted the UK-based Craftivist
Gallectve in 2009, P've always been an activist but then I burnt out
Shouting and marching drained me ~I didn't like demonising people
‘and telling them what to do. I didn’t feel that I ited into some activist
groupe, but I loved craft and saw how it could help to engage people in
tlobal issues in a non-threatening way. Graftivism isa form of slow
activism: it helpe me stop and reflect about what the ites mean to
1me, who they affect and how we can be part ofa solution. Ie's about
personal change, as well as provoking lots of conversation and
building relationships
Thope that this colamn can be useful to yon as a place to find ont
bout crafivism and to inspire your own projects. Inthe words of one
of our craftvits:“A spoonful of craft helps the activism go dawn.”

Howto
1 Use the templates to trace and cut one sinderbelly, a head and
two mirror-image wings from your fabric, leaving a 5mm seam,

2 With right sides facing, sew the two wings together along,
edge A. Open them ont and sew the head shape to the top edge
of the wings with the right sides facing. Open out and top-stitch
along this seam.
3 Now you have two body shapes. Pin these together with the
right sides facing. You'll notice that the wing shape is wider
than the belly shape. Gather the wing fabrie alittle as you're
sewing it to the belly fabric, around the outside edge. Leave a
gap on one side so you can turn it out. ‘Trim any excess fabric

Howto
1 Take one corner of the bandana and wrap it centrally around,
the back ofthe shoes, ensuring that the corner point is around
double the height of the heel ofthe shoe. Pin the edge of the

through the top of the heel.
2 Cut around the bottom of the bandana stightly lower than,

3 Tack along the pinned line and then at the bottom of the

4 Sew along the same line, using a stay stitch at the beginning
and end, Use a back stitch pattern to keep it secure. Sewing

to push the needle through you'll save your fingers.
5 Remove the contrasting colour tacking, Kold the top corner
of the material down over the stitched line.

1 Pin a patterned area of the bandana around the outline of the

2 Remove the pins, fold the excess material under to create a

3 Tack along the outline of the material in a contrasting colour
4 Using a running stitch in a non-contrasting colour, sew
along the outside of the pattern, ensuring that the stitches om
the outward-facing side of the tongue are small. Remove the
contrasting colour tacking.

foam bricks, then cut a second piece of the same size from one
of the others, Reserve the lefiovers, Use the StyroGlue to glue
the two pieces together lengthways to make a block that |
measures 15x10x15em, Allow to dry for two to three hours.
2 Prepare the secondary floral foam pieces. Using the ruler and
serrated knife, measure and cut three 6x9xSem pieces and one
{6x9xI1.Sem piece from the remaining foam.
3 Assemble the sculpture, Centre the floral foam base over the
top of the vase with the 5cm-long side facing you to check
placement, Remove the foam base and apply the StyroGlue
around the top edge ofthe vase. Put the floral foam base back

4 Working piece by piece, use toothpicks to position the

pieces to extend beyond the base. When you're pleased with the
composition, secure each piece in place using StyroGiue,

7 Working in sections, apply small amounts of StyroGlue to the
sculpture and insert the stem ends of the flower heads into the

leave any gaps where the floral foam would show through.

Who doesn’t love a vintage camera?
Photographer Stéphanie de Geus has 30, so it’s
probably worth marking her words when she

‘cameras and her passion for the subjects obvious, Her interestin
taking snaps wns frst sparked by a “rubbish” boyriend who lived and
breathed photography, but then she ditched the bean, kept the hebby

her dad,
Rather like the relationship, it wasn't love at first sight with

her hands on a Diana F* (Lomography’s homage tothe cult camera

from the 60s), that Stéphanie really turned Garry Winogrand, found
film and picked up the Pentax again,
Since that feted day, it’s Inir to say that Stephanie's become a tad
‘obsessed with vintage cameras, even loving the smell and the weight
‘of them, which “makes you fel like you're really holding something
and doing something”. She hunts them out wherever and whenever

Whatever you pick for your first foray nto the vintage camera world,
