We love an embroidery hoop here at Casa Crafty - there's really nothing better than seeing a whole wall covered in the pretty little things. You can use your calico to stiteh a fun little message to yourself or something personal to give toa friend —and then hang it up to get your embroidery hoop wall started Howto 1 Write your message onto the calico using a dressmaker's pencil. You can use a regular pencil ifthe thread you're using is going to completely cover the pencil lines. 2 Place the calico inside the hoop and embroider your design in back stitch, (We used two strands of thread.) 3 Remove the hoops and use the outer hoop as a template to draw a circle on a piece of fe. 4 Place the calico back in the hoop. This time, the hoop will act asa permanent frame for your design. 5 Trim the calico on the reverse of the hoop and sew or glue the circle of felt to the edges to hold the calico firmly in place. Repeat with the underssings. 3 Add embellishments o the wings at this point if you wish, and use a sewing machine or hand-embroider some veins onto the wings. 4 Sew the body pieces together with the right sides facing by sewing around the edge using a straight stitch, Leave a gap on ‘one side so you can turn it out, Trim any excess fabric along the curves and turn it the right way out 5 Stull the body with scrap fabric, Once your moth is nice and plump, hand-sew the gap closed using slip stitch, Use ‘embroidery thread to make the antennae, attach them to the head and add two tiny beads for eyes. 6 Hand-sew the wings onto the body, underwings frst. Rock on! Howto 1 Take one corner of the bandana and wrap it centrally around, the back ofthe shoes, ensuring that the corner point is around double the height of the heel ofthe shoe. Pin the edge of the ‘material through the canvas around the sides of the shoe and through the top of the heel. 2 Cut around the bottom of the bandana stightly lower than, the piping around the tap of the sole, 3 Tack along the pinned line and then at the bottom of the fabric in a contrasting colour, folding the material slightly to create a smooth seam AS 4 Sew along the same line, using a stay stitch at the beginning and end, Use a back stitch pattern to keep it secure. Sewing through the rubber is a bit tricky, but by using something solid to push the needle through you'll save your fingers. 5 Remove the contrasting colour tacking, Kold the top corner of the material down over the stitched line. Forthe tongue 1 Pin a patterned area of the bandana around the outline of the tongue and cut around it, leaving a slight border, 2 Remove the pins, fold the excess material under to create a smooth seam and re-pin, 3 Tack along the outline of the material in a contrasting colour 4 Using a running stitch in a non-contrasting colour, sew along the outside of the pattern, ensuring that the stitches om the outward-facing side of the tongue are small. Using the ruler and serrated knife, measure and cut one 7.5x10x15cm piece from one of the foam bricks, then cut a second piece of the same size from one of the others, Reserve the lefiovers, Use the StyroGlue to glue the two pieces together lengthways to make a block that | measures 15x10x15em, Allow to dry for two to three hours. 2 Prepare the secondary floral foam pieces. Using the ruler and serrated knife, measure and cut three 6x9xSem pieces and one {6x9xI1.Sem piece from the remaining foam. 3 Assemble the sculpture, Centre the floral foam base over the top of the vase with the 5cm-long side facing you to check placement, Remove the foam base and apply the StyroGlue around the top edge ofthe vase. Put the floral foam base back {nto place on top of the vase and allow the glue to dry for about two hours. 4 Working piece by piece, use toothpicks to position the three smaller secondary floral foam pieces on the front, right and back sides ofthe base at varying levels to make an asymmetrical composition, Allow the edges of the secondary pieces to extend beyond the base. When you're pleased with the composition, secure each piece in place using StyroGiue, 5 Position the final piece on top of the base, again allowing it to extend beyond the edge, and glue into place. Allow to dry for ‘two to three hours. 6 Prepare the dried flowers for placement, Use the garden, shears to trim the stems to 2.5em ata diagonal to better pierce the foatn, 7 Working in sections, apply small amounts of StyroGlue to the sculpture and insert the stem ends of the flower heads into the foam to caver the surface as shown, Fill in the surface organically (notin rows) to avoid too rigid a pattern. Do not leave any gaps where the floral foam would show through. If keeping the current seat asi is, just place this face down on the wadding. 3 Stretch the wadding over the frame by stapling it to the underside on one side, then pull quite tight (but not so tight the ‘wadding rips) and staple the opposite side, leaving the corners loose until the end, Repeat with the other two sides. 4 Gather the wadding in the corners, pull them over the corner and staple while pulling taut, Trim off any excess wadding from around the stapled edges and corners THROW INTHE TOWEL oa wr cRRETYIAG Cl 5 Lay the seat top down on your calico and stretch the calico ‘over the seat frame. Staple down once in the middle of one side, pall s tight as possible and staple the calico down once in the middle on the opposite side, Repeat for remaining two sides. 6 Staple across one side evenly, then staple the opposite side and the remaining two sides, leaving the corners until last. As you go, push down on the seat frame on thatside so the foam squashes down and you can pull the calico tight enough, 7 When happy, pull the fabric at the corners tight and staple down. vim the excess calico atthe edges and corners. Keep turning it over, checking that the edges aren't bumpy. You may need to pull tighter as you staple and staple closer together. 8 Lay your tea towel face down and the whole seat top down, ‘onto it, As you did with the calico, staple down one side on the underside of the seat frame, pull the other side taut and staple down on the opposite side. Again, leave the corners until lat. 9 This time, make neat folds at the corners by tucking one part of the fabric under the other and stapling it tightly down. Trim down any excess fabric. 10 Take the smaller piece of calico and fold each edge over by Jem, then iron the edge down. Place on the base of the seat with the folded edges down and staple all the way around. 11 Pat the seat pad back in the frame.
