PROJECT BACKGROUND
For Titan Builders Sdn. Bhd., this technical report presents the structure works of a
residential building at Cadangan Membina 1 Unit Rumah Flat 4 Tingkat, Di Atas Ptb 4960,
Bandar Penggaram, Daerah Batu Pahat, Johor. The actual coordinates of the location area, as
determined by Google Earth, are 1°85'56.9" N and 102°92'56.9" E. The building measures
15.0 m in length, 20.0 m in width, and 12.0 m in height. This project will take up
approximately 300.0 m2.
General building rules and regulations, as well as building and code designs, are outlined
below. The design was meticulously planned and fitted with their own functionalities. Figure
1 depicts the construction site's Google map, while Figure 2 depicts the proposed building's
location.

CHAPTER 3
SCOPE OF PROJECT
This project entails the construction of a four-story residential flat house comprised of living
room, bedroom, dining room, toilet and bathroom. The scope of work encompasses all
aspects of structural design, infrastructure design, and planning. Our company's structure
services include the design and analysis of beams, slabs, and columns, as well as the cost
estimation of all structural parts involved. Additionally, the infrastructure works that will be
done comprise earthwork design and qualification, foundation design, water and sewerage
reticulation design, and cost estimation.
The organisation will carry out structural design work in two ways: manually and
using software. Manual work will be carried out in accordance with British Standard
Eurocode, whereas software design will be carried out in accordance with ESTEEM. The
findings of these two procedures will be compared in order to determine the design's
reliability and to select the most cost-effective building method. Microsoft Project is used to
track progress and schedule this project. A Gantt Chart will be created to ensure that the job
is completed on time and can be readily tracked. Planning and scheduling also enables any
adjustments or modifications made to the initial plans as a result of productivity errors,
weather delays, or geological circumstances to be correctly reviewed and the programmer
appropriately updated.
9
CHAPTER 4
DESIGN CRITERIA
Generally, building designs are governed by local or state building codes. Additionally,
designs must adhere to client standards and expectations. The structural design criteria to be
used in the design of buildings and other structures, as well as their components, for this
project are according to this code of practice.

SPECIFICATION OF DESIGN
5.1.1 Characteristic Strength of Based on Table 3.1 MS-EN 1992-1-1, fck for
Concrete, fck concrete is 30 MPa and fcu for concrete is 37 MPa.
Class C30/37 refers to cylinder and cube strength of
30 and 37 MPa respectively. Unit weight of
reinforced concrete is 25 kN/m3.
5.1.2 Characteristic Strength of Based on Clause 3.2.2(3) from BS-EN 1992-1-
Steel, fyk 1:2004, the specified strength for ribbed
reinforcement (fyk) is in the range of 400-600
N/mm2. The common type of reinforcement currently
used in Malaysia is Grade 460 N/mm2.
Based on Equation 4.1 in Clause 4.4.1.1 (2) from Eurocode 2, the design will be used
for nominal cover. Value for cmin bond, environmental condition and fire resistance
shall also be used. The recommended value for ∆cdev is 10 mm according to National
Annex.

v. Bond
The minimum cover for bond (cmin, bond) based on Table 4.2 BS EN 1992-1-

5.2.2 Loadings
There are two types of actions are considered in this project, permanent action and
variable action. The design action (Nd) is equal to 1.35 Gk and 1.5 Qk.

CHAPTER 6
6.1 Introduction
A structural layout drawing is a design or collection of drawings that shows how a building or
other structure will be constructed. Structural engineers are in charge of preparing structural
drawings. The structural design of the building frame is completed after receiving an
architectural plan of the buildings. This involves determination of the following.
The load-carrying components of a structure are the focus of the layouts. They
describe the size and types of materials to be used, as well as the overall connectivity
requirements. Architectural features such as surface finishes, partition walls, and mechanical
systems are not addressed. The structural drawings are used to explain the building's structure
design to the building authority for approval. They also form part of the contract agreements,
which instruct contractors on how to specify, fabricate, and install structural components.
EC2 Clause 5.3.1 (7) defines column as a compression member where the greater
cross-sectional dimension does not exceed four times the smaller dimension (h ≤ 4b) and the
13
height is at least three times the section depth. The minimum size of a column must meet the
fire resistance requirements given in EC2 Part 1-2. Following are some of the building
principles, which help in deciding the columns positions.
The projection of columns outside the wall in the room should be avoided as they not
only give bad appearance but also obstruct the use of floor space, creating problems in
placing furniture flush with the wall. To avoid the column becoming slender, it must have a
breadth of at least 200 mm. The column spacing should be greatly reduced so that the weight
on each floor's column is lowered and vast sections for columns are not required.
Following are some of the principles, which help in deciding the beams positions.
Slabs are horizontal plate elements forming floor and roof in buildings and normally carry
lateral action. Slabs may be of solid uniform thickness of with ribs running in one or two
directions. Slabs may be simply supported or continuous over one or more supports and are
classified according to the method of support, as follows:
i. One-way solid slab: Slabs of uniform thickness, bending and reinforced in one
direction. One-way slabs are suitable only for relatively short spans.
14
ii. Two-way solid slab: Slabs of uniform thickness, bending and reinforced in
two directions. Two-way slabs are economical for medium spans with medium
to heavy loads.
iii. Ribbed slabs: Slab cast integrally with a series of closely spaced joists which
in turn are supported by a set of beams. Ribbed slabs are designed as a series
of parallel T-beams and economical for medium spans with light to medium
live loads.
iv. Flat slabs: Slabs of uniform thickness, bending and reinforced in two
directions and supported directly by column without beams.
6.5 Stairs
Depending on the use of buildings, the dimensions of a stair should be such that it provides
maximum comfort to users. For example, in public buildings the riser shall be not more than
180 mm, whereas in private buildings it is not more than 200 mm.
6.6 Footings
Foundation transmits the loads from the structure to the underlying soil or rock. It is usually
placed below surface of the ground. All soils compress noticeably when loaded and cause the
supported structure to settle. The two essential requirements in the design of a foundation are:

11.2 Discussion
This project was to design a 4-storey flat house. In this project, all calculations to design a 4-
storey flat house shown in this report comply with Eurocode Specifications. The structural
drawings were produced based on architectural drawing and the design process was
consisting of designing slabs, a staircase, columns, beam and foundations. All members in
this group was participated and designated to design the elements from task distribution as
given. The process of designing of these elements were calculated manually and also
analysed by using ESTEEM software. Esteem software help us to analyse the building
structure and also can obtain the data such as design Bending Moment, axial load, area of
steel required and so on. From the comparison between manual calculation and ESTEEM
data, it is shown that have some different value of Design bending moment, area of steel
required and area of steel provided for each element. It is because several reasons. Incorrect
key-in data in ESTEEM Software may cause manual calculation and ESTEEM Software data
was different. Lastly, human error in manual calculations such as misused specific value and
wrong press calculator also can produce the differences of results.
186
CHAPTER 12
CONCLUSION
All the calculations to design a 4-storey Flat House shown in this report comply with
Eurocode specifications. The structural drawings were produced based on the architectural
drawing and Esteem Software, the design process was consisting of designing slabs, a
staircase, beam, columns, and foundations. The process of designing the columns, beam and
foundations is analysed by using Esteem software before proceed to calculate manually.
Esteem software helps us to analyse the suitable structure of the building constructed. In
conclusion, the calculation satisfies the safety, usefulness, economy, aesthetics,
constructability and durability requirements of this project. The manual calculations teach us
in our critical thinking when it comes to complex design structural building .
