THE METHOD STATEMENT MUST BE EXPLAINED TO THE SITE OPERATIVES BY THE SITE SUPERVISOR/SECTION MANAGER PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT: EACH SECTION MUST BE

1.0 Removing 1. Existing paving blocks will be removed by hand. PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.
existing blocks 2. Broken or cracked blocks will be set aside for disposal. Hand tools to be checked for defects
3. Dependent upon location, removed blocks will be stacked on the verge or adjacent to the existing U- prior to use.
Drains. Gaps will be left between the stacks of blocks at gridline locations, as directed by the Site
Engineer.
2.0 Removing 1. The existing quarry dust will be removed using a front end loader or similar. PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.
Existing Bedding 2. Removed bedding will be loaded into trucks and disposed of at the approved tip site. Hand tools to be checked for defects
3. The surface of the base material will be swept with a mechanical brush. Hand brooms may be used at prior to use.
the edges, or in other locations where a mechanical brush cannot be used. Plant operators must have valid PW
driving permit.
A designated person will direct the
trucks whilst reversing.
3.0 Setting Out 1. A Site Engineer, using a Theodolite, will set up on an approved survey station and set out the horizontal PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.
alignment. Hand tools to be checked for defects
2. Using an automatic level, the Engineer will set out the vertical alignment. prior to use.
3. String lines will be used to control vertical alignment, and as a reference to control joint alignment.
4.0 Laying course The laying course material shall be prepared using one of the following methods, PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.
material dependant on the availability of machinery. Normally Method 1 will be used. Hand tools to be checked for defects
1. Spread out the laying course material in one layer to a depth sufficient to give the prior to use.

compactor or smooth drum roller. The surface will then be leveled by screeding.
2. Spread out the loose laying course material in a uniform layer, screed the material
to a depth sufficient to give the required compacted nominal thickness (30mm)
after compaction of the material and the blocks.
3. Pre spread the laying course material using the F16W asphalt paver to a general
nominal thickness (30mm) the material laid in this manner will require to be re-
screeded prior to laying the blocks.
Note
If the laying course material becomes saturated after placing, then it should be removed and replaced with a
suitably moisture conditioned material. Alternatively, the material can be left in place until it is sufficiently dry
to allow the block paving to continue.
4.0 Laying Blocks 1. The paving blocks will be placed by hand to a right angled herring bone pattern to string lines set at PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.

engineer or paving supervisor. prior to use.
2. The paving will be laid in such a manner which maintains an open face.
3. The alignment of the blocks will be checked by the engineer at intervals not exceeding 4.0 linear

meters.
4. Cut blocks may only be incorporated at the perimeter of the pavement.
5. Cut blocks of less than half the original plan dimensions will be avoided – at no time should a block of
less than one quarter the original plan dimension be used.
6. Adjustments to alignment should be carried out prior to placing cut blocks at the perimeter.
5.0 Compaction 1. The jointing material should be spread evenly over the surface of the paving blocks. PPE to be worn as per the PW SPS.
2. The blocks will be compacted by a minimum of 2 passes using a vibrating plate compactor or smooth Hand tools to be checked for defects
drum roller prior to use.
3. The material will then be brushed into the joints, ensuring that all joints are suitably filled – excess
material will be removed from site.
6.0 Checking On completion of the compaction and cleaning, an Engineer will check for surface irregularities using a
1.000m straightedge. If any area is found to have a gap in excess of that shown in the Employers
requirements (i.e. 3mm in 1000mm) the blocks will be lifted and re-laid to the correct tolerances and the
jointing material replaced.
