IT APPLICATION TOOLS IN BUSINESS (TTH 10:00 –

1. For this week, research on:

 Excel LookUp Function and its uses

According to (Gupta, 2023)The Lookup function

in Excel will reference a cell to find the values from
another row or column against it so that an
appropriate result can be obtained for each of these
rows and columns. There are two ways to use
LOOKUP. These are Vector form and Array form. The
vector form of LOOKUP looks in a one-row or one-
column range (known as a vector) for a value and
returns a value from the same position in a second
one-row or one-column range. On the other hand, The
LOOKUP array forms are looking at the first row or
column of an array for a value to be returned and
returning it in the same position as the last row or
column. If you want a value to be matched in the first
row or columns of an array, then this form of LOOKUP
is for you.

According to (Takhur, 2023), you can find a

particular value in your table or spreadsheet and
present related information from its adjacent cells to
that row by using Excel's Lookup function. For
example, using the Lookup function to display other

information in your row or column like 5 can

be useful when you want to check for number 5 in a
table. You can use the LOOKUP function in Microsoft
Excel to create your own worksheet. You can see this
under the Formula tab in Lookup & References.

 The difference between VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP

According to (Srivastav, 2023), in a book, where

we are looking at the subject and finding out what its
page number is, the LOOKUP function functions as an
index page. In Excel, you will find LOOKUP in the
category of Lookup and References functions such as
HLOOKUP, VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP. When comparing
cells in a row or column, the LOOKUP function will
identify matches and return an answer from another
row or column. The reference functions in Excel that
allow you to match the relevant data with a table
array or grouping of data and display output are
VLOOKUP, VerticalLOOKUP, HLOOKUP or
HorizontalLOOKUP. The VLOOKUP references to
columns and the HLOOKUP references to rows are
different in these reference functions. If we have one
set of horizontal data, the VLOOKUP function will be
used. It'll allow us to query a range of data references
in columns, and will return the information we were
looking for. If there is a set of horizontal data, the
HLOOK UP function shall be applied. We can search a
range of data references using rows and get the
information we're looking for.

KEY DIFFERENCES:

HLOOKUP

1. It's looking for values at a horizontal point in the

table.
2. HLOOKUP is useful when the data is arranged row-
wise.
3. This function searches from the top to the bottom
and it cannot search the bottom-top.
4. It will return the value from a single column, several
columns apart.
5. HLOOKUP is not widely used.

VLOOKUP

1. It's looking for values on the horizontal side of the

table.
2. A comparison of and selection of data arranged in
columns is performed using VLOOKUP.
3. It's looking from left to right, not in reverse manner.
4. From the same row but only a few columns apart, it
returns that value.
5. VLOOKUP is extensively used.

2. Also, find some video tutorial online on how these functions work.

 Then provide your insight/ reaction on the

applicability of the function either in your studies or in your
future works. (Minimum of 100 words)

Together with the flow of time, technological

advancement has also evolved affecting shift and ease for
school and office work. Excel Lookup was made for the
convenience of users at the same time to lessen the
amount of time it consumes when there is a pile of work to
be done or tasks to be fulfilled. There are also formulas that
are comprehensible for users to follow like a simple analogy
to remember. Honestly, I am not good at using Microsoft
applications however, reflecting on what I have watched, it
is really an open view for me that Excel LookUp and any
other technological formats are our helping hand. Here are
my takeaways from the video tutorial: using the search
function, we are able to get a precise or compatible match.
As users, we are allowed to search for data in both vertical
and horizontal rows, it is much easier to use, and lastly, it
does not require you to select the entire table. As a
student, I can apply my inculcations and learnings from the
video tutorial that I have witnessed in presenting my output
on time, in detail, and concisely which I can bring also to
my future field. Excel won't be around anymore, and as an
essential tool for a variety of functions and applications
ranging from information technology projects to corporate
picnics, it will remain used by businesses.
