6 Fig. 6.1 shows a wave travelling in the direction of the arrow along a rope at
t = 0.00 s.

Fig. 6.1

(a) Explain why the wave shown in Fig. 6.1 is a transverse wave.

The particles in the wave/rope is vibrating in a direction

perpendicular to the propagation of the wave.
(b) Describe the movement of point P for one complete cycle, starting from
t = 0.00 s.

(As the wave is travelling to the right) P moves down until it reaches
its maximum (negative) displacement and then move back up until
it reaches maximum (positive) displacement/position again.

Finally, it moves down/return back to it original position (after one

period).
(c) In Fig. 6.1, draw the waveform of the rope half a period later. Indicate the new
position of point P clearly in your drawing with an “x”. [1]

(d) The speed of the wave is 10.0 cm/s.

Calculate the period of the wave.

λ= 75.0 : 5/4 = 60.0 cm

f = v/ λ = 10.0/60.0 = 1/6 Hz
T= 6.00 s

7 brands of laser wavelength / m

equipment
Deep Red 3.5 x 10-7
Lasico 4.7 x 10-7
Fire fly 5.2 x 10-7
Helium Neon 6.5 x 10-7
Leica 8.9 x 10-7

Table 7.1

Table 7.1 shows different brands of laser equipment for industrial use and the
specific wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum it would amplify. The
wavelength of light visible to the human eye ranges from 4.0 x 10-7 m to 7.0 x 10-7 m.

(a) State the brand of laser equipment in table 7.1 that emits infra-red radiation.

Leica ( infra-red radiation has wavelength longer than the red

visible light)

(b) Explain whether all of the above equipment can be used in vacuum.

Yes they can be used in vacuum as all the laser are using
electromagnetic waves which can travel through the vacuum.

(c) Lasico laser equipment is used for corrective eye surgery.

Calculate the frequency of the laser beam from this equipment.

λ= 4.7 x 10-7 m
f = v/ λ = 3.0 x 108 m/s / 4.7 x 10-7 m
= 6.4 x 1014 Hz (2 s.f.)
