1. Explain with the help of neat sketch simple vapour absorption system.
2. Differentiate between vapour compression system and vapour absorption system.
3. What are the desirable properties for the refrigerant and absorbent pair?
4. Explain the construction and working of Electrolux refrigerator.
5. Explain the construction working of Ammonia-Water VARS.
6. Explain the practical VARS for the performance improvement of VARS.
7. Write the thermodynamic analysis of single effect cycle for NH3-H2O VARS.
8. With neat diagram, describe the working of LiBr –Water VARS
9. In a vapour absorption refrigeration system, the refrigeration temperature is –15 0C The
generator is operated by solar heat where the temperature reached is 110 0C. the temperature
of heat sink is 55 0C. What is the maximum possible COP of the system?
10. In a VAS, the refrigeration temperature is -20⁰C. The generator is operated by solar heat
where the temperature is reached to 110 ⁰C. The temperature of the heat sink is 55 ⁰C. What
is the max. possible COP of the system.
11. In an aqua-ammonia system, heat is supplied to the generator by condensing the steam at
200 kPa & 0.95 dry. The evaporator is maintained at -5 ⁰C. The cooling water available for
condenser is at 30 ⁰C. Find its ideal COP. If actual COP of the system is 80 % of ideal COP,
find the mass of the steam needed in kg/hr to produce a refrigeration effect of 60 TR.
Given: Tsat = 120.2 ⁰C , Hfg = 2200 kJ/kg
12. A VARS has generator temp. of 120 ⁰C, evaporator temp. -10 ⁰C & ambient temp. 30 ⁰C.
Estimate maximum possible COP. The actual COP is 0.5 of the maximum. If the capacity
of the plant is 100 TR. Calculate fuel consumption of the plant per day, C.V. of fuel is 40
MJ/kg.
Unit-4 Pschrometry and Thermal Comfort
Solve ONLY FOUR Questions from Unit-4 as per the groups formed:
1. Explain the Psychrometric terms in brief.
2. What is the significance of Relative humidity, Dew point temperature and Degree of
saturation?
3. Write a short note on by- pass factor also deduce the expression for the same.
4. Explain how we can achieve different processes with the help of an air washer.
5. Describe Sensible heating and cooling & dehumidification process with the help of
psychromentric chart.
6. Describe Heating & humidification and heating & dehumidification processes with the help
of psychromentric chart.
7. Define and explain: evaporative cooling and humidifier efficiency
8. Explain the concept of SHF, RSHF, GSHF, and ERSHF with the help of psychrometric
chart.
9. Write a short note on “Thermal exchange of body with environment and discuss the factors
that determine ‘human comfort’.
10. What is the effective temperature? What are the factors that influence the optimum
effective temperature?
11. Moist air exists at a pressure of 1.01 bar. The partial pressure and saturation pressure of
water vapour are 0.01 bar and 0.02 bar respectively. What are the relative humidity and
humidity ratio of the moist air, respectively?
12. On a particular day the weather forecast states that the dry bulb temperature is 37 0 C, while
the relative humidity is 50% and the barometric pressure is 101.325 kPa. Find the humidity
ratio, dew point temperature, and enthalpy of moist air on this day.
13. Atmospheric air at 38°C and 20% R.H. brought to a temperature of 22°C and 60% R.H.
first by adiabatic humidifying and then by cooling. If the quantity of free air flow is 500
m3/min, then find the followings: (a) Capacity of the humidifier. (b) Capacity of the cooling
coil in tons of refrigeration. If the required condition is achieved first by injecting the
saturated steam at 100°C, then find the quantity of steam required per hour and change in
the capacity of the cooling coil.
14. A conference room of 50 seating capacity is to be air conditioned for comfort conditions of
22°C dry bulb temperature and 55% relative humidity. The outdoor conditions are 32°C dry
bulb temperature and 22°C wet bulb temperature. The quantity of air supplied is 0.5
m³/min/person. The comfort conditions are achieved first by chemical dehumidification and
by cooling coil. Determine: 1. Dry bulb temperature of air at exit of dehumidifier; 2.
Capacity of dehumidifier; 3. Capacity and surface temperature of cooling coil, if the by-pass
factor is 0.30.
15. An air-conditioning system is to be designed for cinema-hall of 1000 seating capacity when
the following data is known. Outdoor conditions l1°C and 70% R.H. Indoor required
conditions 20°C and 60% R.H. Amount of air supplied 0.3 m3/min/person. The required
conditions are achieved first by heating, then by adiabatic humidifying and finally by
heating. The condition of air coming out of the humidifier is 75% R.H. then find the
followings: (a) Heating capacity of the first heater in kW and condition of the air coming
out of the first heating coil. Also find the surface temperature required if the bypass factor is
0.3. (b) Heating capacity of the second-heater in kW and bypass factor if the surface
temperature of the coil is maintained at 22°C.
16. The room sensible and latent heat loads for an air conditioned space are 25 kW and 5 kW

The outdoor condition is 40°C dry bulb temperature and 50% relative humidity. The
ventilation requirement is such that on mass flow rate basis 20% of fresh air is introduced
and 80% of supply air is recirculated. The by-pass factor of the cooling coil is 0.15.
Determine: 1. supply air flow rate; 2. outside air sensible heat; 3. outside air latent heat; 4.
grand total heat; and 5. effective room sensible heat factor.
