NETWORKING 2: WEEK 1

Getting Started to
Networking
OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be
able to:

• Explain what a network is, describe how

networks work, and identify the benefits of using
a network.
Introduction to Networks
A network is a system that connects two or more
computers together, allowing them to exchange
information. It is a more efficient way of sharing files,
resources, and programs compared to physically
transporting them on flash drives, which is known as
the "sneakernet." Networks can be created using
cables or wireless network adapters, enabling
computers to communicate and collaborate.
To function properly, networks require several components:
• Network Interfaces: Computers need
network interfaces, either built-in or through a
network adapter, to connect to the network.
• Cables or Wireless Connections: Networks
can be established by connecting computers
with cables or by using wireless network
adapters.
To function properly, networks require several components:
• Switches or Routers: These devices allow
multiple computers to connect and
communicate within a network. Switches are
used for local networks, while routers are
used for larger networks that connect multiple
local networks.
To function properly, networks require several components:
• Network Software: Special software is
needed to manage and control the network.
This software helps facilitate communication
and ensures smooth operation of the network.
Benefits of Networks:
• File and Resource Sharing: Networks make it easy
to share files, whether they are documents,
photos, or videos. Shared resources like printers
and hard drives can be accessed by multiple
computers, saving time and resources.
• Collaboration: With a network, people can work
together on the same documents or projects,
making collaboration seamless and efficient.
Benefits of Networks:
• Communication: Networks enable
communication through various means, such
as email, instant messaging, and
videoconferencing. This makes it easy to
connect with others, even if they are located
in different places.
Benefits of Networks:
• Centralized Management: Networks are often
managed by a network administrator who
ensures smooth operation and addresses any
technical issues that may arise. Having a
dedicated person or team to manage the
network helps maintain its reliability and
security.
