THE LYCEUMER
2023 AUGUST NEWSLETTER NO 0020 LYCEUM ANURADHAPURA

What in your life have you been most deliberate about?

What has been the outcome of that deliberate focus?

Have you heard of the Glen Cunningham story? At the age of 8 he suffered severe burns on his
legs. Doctors said he would never walk. But they couldn’t look in to Glen’s heart. Glen always
believed he would walk. And soon he did. He then began to run. And told himself he would run
faster than any other man.

In 1934 he set the world record of 4’06” for the mile. He was honored as the outstanding athlete
of the century at Madison Square Garden.

Glen was focused on what he wanted to achieve and kept persevering until he did. That is
called “GRIT”. Most often the difference between success and failure is our ability grind it out
when the going gets tough. As Denzel Washington said “Goals on the road to achievement
cannot be achieved without discipline and consistency”.

Accept Challenges

"The key to life is accepting challenges. Once someone stops doing this, he's dead." - Bette Davis

One of the greatest keys to personal growth in this life is the ability to face challenges and meet
them head-on. Facing and meeting challenges involves overcoming fear - fear of embarrassment,
or fear of failure.

The purpose of challenge is to give you greater experiences and to broaden your perspective. We
become pigeon-holed into one way of thinking without having our beliefs challenged.

Challenge plays an extremely important role when it comes to character. Character is not
necessarily created by facing challenges, but rather it is revealed by them. We may be completely
unaware of our own character until meeting with seemingly daunting obstacles. It is the manner in
which we deal with them that reveals our true inner self.

There are several things you can do to help yourself deal with challenges more calmly. Essentially
you need to open yourself up to new possibilities, new experiences, whether you think you are ready
for them or not.

Accept all challenges ahead - specially in the new academic year, and move forward very positively
and very strongly.
All the best!
