(2) Read the passage carefully.
A thoughtful deed
Once there was an old man called John who lived alone in a tiny cottage. He did odd jobs for
the people who lived near him. Everyone liked him because he was kind and always happy.
One day John was sitting on the doorstep of his little cottage and was eating a big red apple.
While he was enjoying the warm sunshine, he started thinking of what he could do to make
people happy. He knew that he was old and not very clever. “There must be some way in
which I can help people,” he thought.
All at once, a smile came over his face. “I know what I will do,” he said. Everywhere he
worked, the old man asked for part of his pay in apples. He ate the apples and saved all the
seeds and collected them in a bag. The people of the village thought that he was strange.
Some said he was crazy but the village children did not believe this because they were very
fond of him.
One day, John locked the door of his home and tramped away. In one hand, he had a walking
stick. In his other, he carried a small bag of apple seeds. He walked far into the country and
from time to time, stopped by the side of the road. Each time he made a hole in the ground
with his stick. Then he dropped an apple seed into the hole and covered it with soil. All
summer he wandered from place to place and planted his seeds by the sides of the roads.
He spent the rest of his life doing this during his free time. Fine trees
grew from the seeds which he planted. Every autumn they were
covered with apples. Passersby often stopped to eat some of the
fruit. “How nice it is to see such lovely apple trees,” they said.
“Who planted them here?” The people who lived in those parts
knew the answer.
