The Gentala Arasy Museum holds a large collection of manuscripts and relics of
Islamic art and culture. Almost all of the collections are related to Islamic civilization
in Jambi City.

"There are more than 100 collections at Gentala Arasy, consisting of special
collections, entrusted collections, and collections entrusted to the community such as
books," said Fikri, Gentala Arasy Museum Educator.

The following are various collections at the Gentala Arasy Museum.

Mushaf Al-Qur’an al-jambi

This Jambi Mushaf Al-Qur'an measures 125 x 180 cm. On display to the right not far
from the museum entrance. This Jambi Al-Quran Mushaf is displayed on a table with
typical Jambi carvings, while the top is covered with glass.

"The Al-Qur'an Mushaf is one of the masterpieces here too. It was made in 2014 to be
a source of pride by incorporating Jambi Malay elements in the frame, there are leaf
sizes, and Jambi batik carvings. Each sheet (the motif) is different that's different,"
said Fikri.

The Koran is made with Jambi motifs (carvings) deliberately so that the Jambi nuance
is very strong. This is because Malay cultural life in Jambi is very closely related to
Islamic history. The history of Islam and Malay culture cannot be separated, since the
14th century Islam has begun to enter Jambi where customs are based on syara, syara
is based on the Book of Allah. The existence of the Jambi Mushaf Al-Quran is a
milestone in the history of the spread of Islam which has become deeply rooted in the
region across the city of Jambi where this museum is located.

Books and manuscripts

In the Gentala Arasy catalog there are at least 23 books on display there. Now several
books have been digitized and are not displayed in their original form to preserve our
own durability. However, when visiting there, sometimes the monitor displaying the
digitization of the book often doesn't work.

The book on display contains prayers and life guidelines. More details can be
grouped, such as religious texts, linguistics, philosophy, medicine, moral teachings,
genealogy, astrology, history and traditional regulations. Several manuscripts were
found using Malay Arabic script, such as the genealogy manuscript of Habib Sayyid
Hussain, who was one of the first people to spread Islam in Jambi City in the 16th
century.

Apart from that, there is also the Book of Tafsir Khawatib which is written and in
Arabic. It measures 17 cm wide and 27 cm long. Contains 240 pages with 29 per
page. This book contains about Sarah Muhtaminah which was written in 1353
Hijriah.

Clothing Supplies

The touch of Islamic culture in Jambi society is very strong, especially in clothing.
The various forms of clothing used, such as headscarves, turbans, trobus hats, robes
and others, are combined with local cultural elements, which have their own identity
and nuances for the wearer, especially during religious rituals and celebrations.

Trobus Hat
This hat has a diameter of 19 cm and a height of 12 cm. This hat is usually worn by
teachers at the Nurul Iman Islamic Boarding School, Jambi City. The material for this
hat is black, red and yellow cloth with a weaving technique as the manufacturing
process. This headdress has a geometric motif in the shape of jasmine on the bottom
and top edges. The top of this hat is woven with white cotton cloth and the inside is
lined with light purple satin cloth.

Shawl

Some of the scarves in the collection at Gentala Arasy are left by scholars and
teachers at Madrasah Nurul Iman Seberang, Jambi City. In some records it may date
from the early 19th century.

This scarf is thought to have come from Arabia or Persia and was worn by teachers
returning from Mecca at that time. This scarf is usually used as a head covering by
Madrasah Nurul Iman teachers when they are preachers and teaching.

Coins

Coins from the past are also on display at Gentala Arasy. These coins are mostly
relics of currency from the Dutch colonial era. This indicates that Jambi was an area
previously occupied by the Dutch. Some of the coins have the inscription
Nederlandsch Indie with images of makhota and wheat, then there are also those with
images of the British Island of Sumatra from 1804.

Frames of Islamic figures in Jambi

On several walls in the Gentala Arasy Museum, frames of figures from Islamic
civilization in Jambi are lined up. Apart from that, it also explains how people first
converted to Islam in Sumatra, Jambi province and even in the Jambi City area, to be
precise in the Malay Arab village where the museum is located.

The sequence of Islamic civilization began with the arrival of the rich Chinese
merchant Datuk Sin Tay. Then she had a child named Nyai Resih and married a man
of Arab descent named Habib Sayyid Hussain who is also said to have spread the
religion of Islam in Jambi. Until now, Habib Sayyid Hussain's grave, located in the
area opposite Jambi City, is still visited by the public.
