Abstract
Decreasing or increasing tariffs on products imported into
Ecuador involves complex considerations of economic, political
and social factors. While increasing tariffs may protect domestic
industries and stimulate economic growth, it could also lead to
higher prices for consumers and strains in international trade
relations. On the other hand, lower tariffs could benefit
consumers through lower prices and greater product variety, but
could also weaken domestic industries and competitiveness.
Therefore, in order to make sound policy decisions, it is necessary
to strike a balance that considers the interests of domestic
industries as well as the welfare of consumers.

Dominian Suject
Argument:
The protection of local industries not only shields a
country's economy from unfair competition but also fosters
sustainable economic development, encourages innovation, and
generates employment within the community. It is a strategy that
can benefit both local businesses and the general population,
thereby strengthening the country's economic foundation.

Counterargument:

The excessive protection of local industries could

lead to a long-term decrease in their competitiveness, which
would have negative effects on the overall economy. Instead of
shielding local industries from foreign competition, some argue
that it is more beneficial to promote policies that foster innovation
and continuous improvement to ensure their competitiveness in
the global market.
Refutation:
However, external competition can be a significant
driver for innovation and efficiency within local industries,
ultimately benefiting the economy as a whole by enhancing the
competitiveness and performance of these industries in the global.
Conclusion
Ultimately, external competition can prove to be an

essential driving force for innovation and efficiency within local

industries, thereby contributing to the enhancement of
competitiveness and performance of these industries in the global
market, with benefits for the economy overall.
This essay emphasizes that overprotection of local
industries can affect their long-term competitiveness, while
external competition can drive innovation and efficiency.
It is suggested to seek a balance between local
protection and exposure to international competition to foster
continuous improvement and maintain competitiveness in the
global market.

Tariffs on imported products in Ecuador are crucial
as they affect both the national economy and society. Historically,
these tariffs have been used to protect local industries and
stimulate economic growth. However, this approach can have
negative repercussions for consumers, as higher prices for
imported products can reduce their purchasing power and access
to essential goods.
Historically, Ecuador has used tariffs to protect its
domestic industries from foreign competition and stimulate
economic growth. In Ecuador, tariffs are regulated by the
Constitution Art. 305. (EXTERIOR, 2022) While tariffs can
protect domestic industries, they can also raise the prices of
imported products, thereby reducing the purchasing power of
consumers and potentially limiting access to essential
commodities.
This delicate balance between protecting domestic
industries and ensuring consumer welfare must be carefully
considered in tariff policy decisions. The economic impact of
tariffs in Ecuador is multifaceted and affects both domestic
industry and consumer welfare. While tariffs can stimulate job
creation and economic growth domestically, they can also lead to
higher prices for imported products, which can strain consumers'
budgets. Balancing these competing interests is essential to
making informed tariff policy decisions.
Tariffs protect domestic industries from unfair
competition from abroad, leveling the playing field and
promoting competitiveness. These are also regulated by the

Foreign Trade Committee (COMEX) (MINISTERIO DE

PRODUCCION COMERCIO EXTERIOR, 2024) made up of
entities such as the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade,
Investment and Fishing, and the National Customs Service of
Ecuador. However, elevated tariffs may render Ecuadorian
products less competitive in the global market, potentially leading
to decreased export volumes and affecting the nation's standing in
global trade dynamics.
This delicate balance between protecting domestic
industries and maintaining competitiveness on the global stage
poses a challenge for Ecuador's tariff policies. The effect of tariffs
on Ecuador's international competitiveness is complex, with
tariffs serving as a tool to protect domestic industries while also
influencing the country's position in the global market. Balancing
these competing interests is essential to ensure that Ecuador
remains competitive in international trade while also
safeguarding domestic industries.
Changes in tariff policies can have far-reaching
consequences beyond economic considerations, affecting
Ecuador's social fabric and international relations.
(TRIBUTARIO, 2023) The social and political impact of tariff
policies in Ecuador goes beyond economic considerations,
influencing income distribution and foreign relations. It is
imperative that policymakers take these broader implications into
account when formulating and implementing tariff policies to
ensure that they are in line with the country's social and political
objectives.
