3. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (Continued)

A. General (Continued)
The PBE is intended to provide breathing protection, in aviation applications up to 40,000 feet
(12,192 m) in altitude, for a pilot or crew members trained in its use, with a minimum 15 minutes
duration. The breathing device is vacuum-sealed in a transparent bag and contained within a carrying
case (1), which can be stored in a stowage rack. The vacuum-sealed transparent bag prevents
exposure to atmospheres, which could cause loss of efficiency. The device is ready for use on the
aircraft unless the transparent bag has lost vacuum or the color of the moisture indicator has changed
to pink, then the device is unfit for service and is not to be used.
The breathing device includes a double layer hood (3), which encloses the entire head. When properly
worn, the device can accommodate beards, long hair and glasses. An integral life support unit (2) is
attached to the hood and located at the back of the head. A head harness is attached within the hood
to properly support the device on the head.

(2) Carrying case
The carrying case has an inspection window and a hand-carry strap. The inspection window is
used to check the color of a moisture indicator strip & the date of manufacture for the breathing
device, without opening the carrying case.
A label, attached to the front of the carrying case, gives abbreviated operating instructions.
(3) Life support unit
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISASSEMBLE OR REPAIR THE LIFE SUPPORT
UNIT. THE UNIT CONTAINS A CHEMICAL OXYGEN GENERATOR AND A
CHEMICAL SCRUBBER. IF IT HAS NOT BEEN EXPENDED THE GENERATOR
CONTAINS A LIVE IGNITION TRAIN AND SODIUM CHLORATE, A STRONG
OXIDIZER. INADVERTENT ACTIVATION OF THE GENERATOR MAY RESULT IN
FIRE. THE SCRUBBER CONTAINS GRANULAR LITHIUM HYDROXIDE (LiOH), A
CORROSIVE SOLID, WHICH CAN IRRITATE THE EYES AND RESPIRATORY
TRACT.

The life support unit is non-repairable and contains a chemical oxygen generator, scrubber,
venturi nozzle, vent valve and a housing.
NOTE: During and immediately after oxygen generator operation, the housing also serves as a
heat shield.
WARNING: EXERCISE CARE WHEN TOUCHING THE HOUSING DURING OR AFTER
OPERATION. DO NOT INSERT FINGERS INTO THE OPENINGS AS HOT METAL
PARTS MAY BE CONTACTED RESULTING IN BURNS TO THE FINGERS.

The oxygen generator contains a “PULL TO ACTUATE” ring & firing mechanism (initiation train),
pressure relief valve and sodium chlorate. The generator, when initiated, causes sodium chlorate
to decompose producing low-pressure oxygen and heat. The oxygen generator, once initiated,
cannot be stopped and produces a minimum of 15 minutes of breathable oxygen. A generator in
which the sodium chlorate has decomposed is considered to be expended.
Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the P/N 802300 Series PBE and Paragraph 14
for PBE disposal procedures. A copy of the MSDS is available from AVOX Systems or Zodiac
Services.

C. Operation
Refer to Figure 2 for a simplified schematic of the breathing device during operation.
When the “PULL TO ACTUATE” ring is disengaged from the life support unit the chemical oxygen
generator is initiated. Low-pressure oxygen produced by the chemical oxygen generator flows from the
generator into a venturi nozzle, which pulls hood gas through the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubber. This
scrubbed flow and added oxygen are vented into the hood to mix with hood gas. Once oxygen flow is
started it cannot be stopped. Oxygen will be produced for a minimum of 15 minutes.
NOTE: The breathing device generates oxygen when in use. Do not allow an operating breathing
device to come in direct contact with flame as oxygen vigorously accelerates combustion.
