1.0 INTRODUCTION

2
There are countless people in need in the world today, but perhaps none more so than a child
who has lost or been abandoned by both parents and lives in an orphanage. Orphanages are
known to have limited resources and frequently overworked staff. Volunteering in an
orphanage is a terrific way for anyone wishing to give back to the society by assisting the less
fortunate for this and other reasons.

Young Mercy 2022 has given the opportunities for us (students of University of Cyberjaya) to
have been able to visit one of the orphanages in Malaysia to provide as much assistance as
we can. Aiding orphanages and orphans can improve children's health, literacy, education,
and empowerment and also can improve one’s skills which you can only achieve through
experience. Thus, by conducting a visit to this orphanage, we hope our efforts can make a
positive impact in people's lives. Enjoy every moment and make lasting memories with
people of all ages.

6.0 ACTIVITY / PROJECT DETAILS

4
6.1 Volunteering project
The primary objective of our visit is to bring cheer and happiness to the children by exposing
ourselves to those who are less fortunate through interaction and activities. First and
foremost, we are to carry out an ice-breaking session to help create a relaxed environment so
that the children are able to enjoy the day comfortably. This will be followed by many other
fun activities, like aerobics and drawing sessions. Apart from that, we are also going to
conduct a basic health screening for the children to ensure their health is in good condition.
Last but not least, we have planned to distribute care packages containing a generous amount
of various essentials to all the children of the orphanage, as well as share the letters of
encouragement from students of UOC. At the end of the day, we hope that we will be able to
take home a few valuable lessons and learn to project hospitality by communicating and
interacting with the children as well as the caretakers of the orphanage.

6.2 Fundraiser event

In order to provide care packages to all the children in the foster home as well as carry out all
the activities planned, our team will be conducting a total of two fundraising activities to raise
sufficient funds:

6.2.1 Virtual Yoga class

Practicing yoga is a great way to de-stress, build strength, become more flexible, get
in tune with your body, and boost your overall well being. It is proven that students
who practice yoga regularly are bound to have a positive effect on both their health
and academics. Hence, this virtual yoga class would very much be beneficial to UOC
students, who are our main target audience for this fundraising event. Furthermore,
virtual yoga classes are an excellent method for people to learn and practice without
hesitation. A professional yoga instructor will be invited to conduct the virtual classes
for free to provide the students with the best experience.

6.2.2 Whispered words

Whispered words is a letter-writing event where you can reconnect with people you
haven't spoken to in a long time or write a letter to express your gratitude to someone
special. Although letter writing has been in decline because of smartphones, the
Internet, and before that, the telephone, for hundreds of years, it was the only way for
people separated by distance to get in touch with one another. But fortunately, on the
7th of December, we have no excuse because it’s National Letter-Writing Day. Hence,

6
our team has decided to help UOC students surprise their loved ones or even the
lecturers with handwritten letters. Customers can choose to send the letter with their
name on it or anonymously. In addition to that, we also encourage students to write
letters of encouragement for the children in the orphanages so that we can deliver
them to the children on the day of the visit as a reminder that there are people out
there in the world that care about them.
