Coordination tests

A. Tests for coordination in upper limbs


1. Finger to nose test:
➢The patient is asked to extend his arm and then to touch tip of the
nose with tip of the index finger (twice with eye open and close)
➢In patient with cerebellar dysfunction, with closing eye, he will do in
a decomposed movement showing tremors that increased at the end
of the movement with failure to reach the nose (dysmetria)

2. Finger to finger test:


➢The patient is asked to
touch the tip of index
finger (twice with eye

➢The results will be
similar to finger-nose

3. Test for adiadocokinesia: the patient is asked to do rapid
alternating movements; e.g. supination and pronation

3. Test for rebound: this is overshooting of
a limb when a resistance to its
movement is suddenly removed. Failure
to break a movement at desired point
A. Arm pulling or flexion test: the patient
cannot stop movement of his forearm
after release of the resistance offered by
the examiner, so it flies backward and
may hit his face
B. Wrist slapping test: the out stretched
hand of the patient is suddenly tapped
downward. An exaggerated
displacement of the arm occurs in cases
of motor ataxia
B. Tests of coordination in the lower limbs
1. Heel-knee test:
➢The patient is asking to put his heel on the opposite knee (right heel
on the left knee & vice versa) then along chin of tibia till head of
other limb
➢The results will be similar to finger-nose test
