September 17, 2019 [ LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9]

I. Objectives:
1. Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of…
 The unit, mole that quantitatively measures the number of very small particles of matter.

2. Performance standard: The learners shall be able to:

 Analyze the percentage composition of different brands of two food products and decide on the products’
appropriate percentage composition.
3. Learning Competencies/Objectives:
 Use the mole concept to express mass of substances. (S9MT-IIi19)
 Determine the percentage composition of a compound given its chemical formula and vice versa. (S9MT-
IIj20)
4. Specific objectives: The learners will be able to…
 Solve for the percentage composition of a Compound
II. Subject Matter
1. Topic : Percentage Composition of a Compound
2. Reference : Teacher’s Guide
3. Materials: Visual aid, Marker, etc.
III. Learning Task
1. Review
 Review to the students the following to the students.
o Mass number
o Molar mass
2. Motivation
To motivate the learners, play the song about chemistry and have the students dance and sing with the music.
3. Lesson Proper
3.1 Activity
Instruct the students to solve for the percentage of numbers as follows:
20%of 50 50% of 100 80% 0f 30 30% 0f 30 20% 0f 80 20% of 0
10% of 70 20% of 60 80% of 10 60% of 90 70% of 90 100%of 0
3.2 Analysis
 What is percentage composition of a compound?
 How to determine the percentage composition of a compound?
3.3 Abstraction

 Percentage composition of a compound is the ratio of the amount of each element to the total amount of
individual elements present in the compound.
 The percentage composition of a compound can be determined using the formula:

% mass of element = mass of element in the compound x 100

Mass of the compound

3.4 Application Applying the given formula, let the students solve the problems given:
 Glucose (C6H12O6) is a six-carbon sugar also known as the blood sugar. How many percent of carbon
is present in glucose?
 The fuel values of the hydrogen-containing fuels depends on the mass percentage of hydrogen (H).
rank the following compounds in terms of their “fuel value” with 1 as the highest fuel value and 3 as
the one with the lowest fuel value:
o Ethane (C2H6)
o Propane (C3H8)
o Ethanol (C2H5OH)

IV. Assessment Determine for the percentage composition of each element of the compound:
Lactic acid ( C3H6O3)
Ascorbic acid (C6H8O6)
